March 2014 AORN News admin • March 5, 2014 AORN of Greater Kansas City, Chapter 2601 ~ “A River Runs Through It” President’s Message Knock, knock. Who’s there? Opportunity. Opportunity who? Opportunity to serve your AORN Chapter. We are two thirds through the 2013-2014 year. How would you evaluate your involvement in your professional organization? Do you attend our monthly Chapter meetings? Are there committees you would like to participate on in the role of Chair, Co-Chair or member? Would you like to attend AORN Surgical Conference & Expo? Are you interested in serving as an elected official and/or delegate in our Chapter? You are only limited by yourself. Opportunity is available to all of us. What you do or do not do with your opportunity defines who you are. To the members who want more out of their Chapter, will you press forward and step up to lead our Chapter? What inspires you is sometimes in plain sight and stumbled upon accidently. At our March Chapter meeting we will listen to members who have accepted the opportunity to represent our Chapter as each candidate presents her nominating speech to the members present. Will you be there to encourage the candidates on their journey to lead our Chapter in the future? Will you begin to wonder if you are capable to do the same? “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” ~ Thomas Edison I hope each of you have the opportunity to attend the March 18, 2014 AORN of Greater Kansas City Chapter 2601 meeting! Dear AORN Friends (and yes adopted extended family), AORN has been a big part of my life for many, many years. I have loved the camaraderie, relationships & close friendships I have enjoyed over the years. My family & I are so appreciative of the many prayers, thoughts & encouraging words. It’s been friends like you & our wonderful family support that has held us up over these past 3 months. I’m very happy to let you know that Tom has made that important turn on the road to recovery just in the last few days. He’s tasting food & eating like a champ. He’s regaining his strength & I finally am seeing that smile I’ve missed so much. The hope & belief of getting better has returned to his eyes. By the time you read this, I hope to have him home again. I would never have expected it, but am not surprised by the great generosity everyone has shown & shared with us. I had run out of benefit time, & was not getting paid anymore. I’ve just started back to work part time so that will help. The cards signed by so many really made my day. Thank you all again so very much for your generosity at the February meeting. We appreciate it so much! Heartfelt Thanks! Barb Brown and Tom February Meeting Roster It was brought to my attention that the sign in sheet for the February meeting did not get to everyone. If you attended please email me at pgallagherkc@cs.com and I will add your name to the form. Candidate Statements President Elect 2014: Sharon Williamson I’ve been an OR Nurse for 38 years. I started working in Wichita in a teaching hospital with 20 operating rooms. They had all the specialties’ like neuro, cardio, ortho and everything else. Everyone was known by their last names. Then after two years of working there and ending up in the heart room, I met my husband and he moved me to Basehor, Ks. I started working in a small community hospital in Leavenworth, called St. Johns. Everyone in the hospital knew each other by their first names. It was very family orientated. There was only 2 OR’s but they did everything but neuro and cardiac surgeries. After 6 years of full time, I went to part time while my boys were in school then back to full time as they got older for the next 25 years and counting. The administration seemed to work around my life changes. My life is the work I do in the OR. You could ask my boys. Sometimes they would say” mom you like your job more than us”. And they didn’t understand why I was always on call. I told then it was just part of my job. I did try to juggle work and family, but it was hard since I loved them both. I have been a member of the Association for 25 years and I received my CNOR in 1994 and I will be renewing again this year for the 3rd time. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a member of this chapter. It is good to be able to collaborate with other nurses for the same cause. I enjoy all the activities like the pancake breakfast and the bowling tournament (which my team won last year). It’s great that we always have a workshop in January for all the nurses in the area. I would be honored to run for president-elect for the coming 2014 election. Thank you Sharon Williamson RN, BSN, CNOR Vice President 2014: Louann Huffman I am honored to accept this nomination to serve as your Vice President. As your Vice President, I will represent you. I am prepared to step in as needed and will represent you on the board as required. It has been my pleasure to have been an active member of this excellent Greater Kansas City Chapter of AORN #2601 for over 10 years, serving on the Board of Directors, Workshop co-chair for several years, as Pancake Breakfast chair, delegate to Congress 3 times, and American Royal Parade participant. I am certified in ophthalmology as well as operating room. I am passionate about my role as a circulator in the Operating Room at St. Joseph Medical Center as the patient’s advocate to keep them safe. I believe in the values of our professional organization. Each day I am impressed with AORN and all our organization has offer. I have gotten to meet, share, and discuss with professionals across the city and look forward to our meetings. I was honored to have been selected as our chapter’s Perioperative Nurse of the Year in 2013. You can count on me to fulfill the duties of this office and do all I can continue to help this chapter be successful. Thank you for your vote. Louann Secretary 2014: Karen Marrow My name is Karen Morrow. I am currently the GU/GYN/Robotics Specialty Team Leader for North Kansas City Hospital. I have been a member of AORN since 1984. While my children were young I was a member in name only. They are now grown and I have once again become active in our Chapter. In recent years I have served on the Board of Directors and as Newsletter editor. I was also co-chair for the Northland pancake breakfast fund raiser. It would give me great pleasure to serve the chapter as your secretary. Secretary 2014: Libby Nasche My name is Libby Nasche and I am submitting my name for the nomination of Secretary for the Greater KC Chapter of AORN. I have been employed at Children’s Mercy Hospital for 25 years and have been in the OR there for 15 years. I received my CNOR certification in 2006 and have been a member of AORN since 2013. While in the OR at CMH I have had numerous positions and roles and am currently one of the Perioperative Educators. I feel like I would be a good candidate for this position as I am very organized and thorough in my approach to all things in life as my co-workers, friends and family can attest. I was unable to be a member of AORN for many years due to other commitments but now have the time to fully commit to the chapter and am eager to help in any way that I can. I will graduate in October with my MSN in Health Care Administration at MidAmerica Nazarene University. I would appreciate your vote for Secretary of the Greater KC Chapter of AORN. Thank you for your consideration. Currently, I work at Children’s Mercy Hospital on the Orthopaedic Scrub Team, and as one of 3 Perioperative Educators. As a Perioperative Nurse the most important aspect of my job is that of the Patient Advocate. In our field of practice AORN is the most influential force that drives the Quality of Patient Care, because AORN sets the standards. I am proud to be a member of AORN. I would appreciate your vote. Thank you. Nominating Committee 2014: Tracy Porter Hi my name is Tracy Porter and I’ve been a nurse for 18 years; 14 of those in the OR; 6 in outpatient surgery. I have two boys who are growing up way to fast in front of my eyes and now it’s time for me to get involved. I want to get others involved, either by joining AORN or members here to take more interest. So vote for me for taking another step into this wonderful organization. If I get a chance to attend the AORN conference this year, I see it as a chance to improve on the nursing skills I so dearly love. After other degrees, (Bachelors and Masters of Science) and several short careers, (military, social services and stay at home mom), I entered into the field of nursing (2007) and have been totally satisfied since. A little over two years ago I was just finishing my fifth year as a med surg nurse at St John Hospital in Leavenworth KS. Although I loved nursing, I was just starting to get to a point where I felt like I needed a change in my career. I just was not quite sure what area of nursing to go into next. From the time I started nursing school in 2004, I knew I eventually would like to go on medical missions as a nurse. I had already gone on several youth missions with my children and really felt like the medical mission field was where God eventually wanted me. So, just as I am feeling a need to change my area of nursing, I see an ad for a medical mission and I notice that the people in the ad are a surgical team. I had no idea how I would get into this field of nursing but I then thought this was the next step for my career in nursing and that I would need the skill as an OR nurse to get closer to my plan of medical missions. I started to pray about it and before I knew it, a supervisor calls me into her office and asks me if I would like to train as a PRN Circulator since I was already a person who would float to other units quite a bit already. Well, needless to say I immediately knew this was all a part of Gods plan and I went for it. Even though St John is a small hospital, it took a good amount of time to orient. I was really impressed with the people I worked with in surgery. I was especially impressed with Sharon Williamson who runs our surgery department. Along with another circulator, Stephanie Wait, Sharon has been a great mentor to me. She is one of those OR nurses who can do it all; scrub, circulate, PACU, CPD, you name it. She took care of our whole department and could jump right in and give us a hand if needed. She has so much knowledge, yet she is always willing to share it by teaching and training us and encouraging us to learn as much as we can. Consequently I have learned how to scrub basic general surgery cases and function in CPD as well. I am very thankful for the skills I have learned in the last two years working in surgery. I enjoy the whole process of ensuring patient safety whether it is making sure they are safe in surgery or that we are processing the instruments properly, you name it, I love it all. This year my last child has headed off to college. I now feel that it is time to venture into medical mission work. I’m not sure if it will be local here in KC or abroad, but I plan on starting my adventure this summer. Over the next five years I definitely see myself continuing in the field of surgery. I also am a PICC nurse part time and see myself continuing in that field as well. I am in my second year of AORN membership. Sharon Williamson convinced me to join and I am so glad I did. When I attend the meetings, or go to the local conferences, I leave so pumped because I always enjoy what I’ve learned, and really feel like I can use the material back at my job in Leavenworth. I also just love meeting other nurses who are in the same area of work as I am. That is why I know attending the upcoming conference in Chicago would be awesome. I’m like a dry sponge just waiting to soak up all that I can. I would love to get in on all there is to learn at this conference and take it back to my place of work and not only share it with my fellow co-workers, but also share it with members of AORN in the KC area. Most of all, I think this will continue to help me strive to become a great OR nurse in pursuit of mission work. Amy Cook, RN St John Hospital.
