Central Ohio aorn Newsletter September 2014 President’s Message Well the summer weather has finally arrived and everyone is complaining about how hot it is. Also it is time for college football which means that fall is right around the corner. Your team of officers and board members has been busy planning our meetings for the coming year. We have scheduled a lot of different topics including an update from Jeanne LaFoutain's recent deployment to Iraq, and a patient's perspective on gastric bypass surgery. It is shaping up to be an exciting year for AORN. I suggested last May that you all consider making time to attend your monthly meetings. As I said before, it is generally two hours a month, includes dinner and a CE, and offers the chance to meet new people from across the city. I have formed many friendships through AORN and personally know nurses from every OR in the city and beyond. It's a great way to network with others as well. You are already paying for your membership so why not get the most out of it. Our first meeting is at Stephanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, and Jeanne Lafountain will be presenting. Print out the meeting flyer and post it on your meeting board at work. Talk up the meeting with others you work with. Bring a friend! Encourage others to join. Hope to see you there! Let's make this our best year ever! Community Service Opportunity In conjunction with the Surgery Centers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the Central Ohio AORN will be teaming up to make pillowcases for the ConKerr cancer project. Please see the message below for more information about the project. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and also time for the 5th annual Miles of Pillowcase Smiles (MOPS) campaign, an event started by ConKerr Cancer founder Cindy Kerr. The primary focus of this event is to raise community awareness of childhood cancer AND the great work our organization does, thanks to all of you! The goal for September 2014 is to sew as many "MILES" of pillowcase smiles as possible. Last year the national total was 64,638 pillowcases, or 30.6 miles -- one mile of pillowcases equals 2,112 cases. The national goal for this year is 44,000, one for each child in treatment across the country. The cancer patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital benefit directly from this foundation. Check out the website for information at ConKerrCancer.org. Details will follow regarding a “Pillowcase Pizza Party” if you are interested in actual construction of the pillowcases. If not, any donation would be appreciated. Each pillowcase will cost $8 for the fabric. You can bring your money to the meeting on September 9th or mail it to my home at 627 Glacier Pass, Westerville, OH 43081, payable to me (I’ll be bringing the fabric). Thanks in advance for considering participating in our Service Project. GO BIG TEN (How many teams are there now????)
