Then, look up and write down the definition for each of the following words. 1. Mediocre on pg. 113 – average or ordinary 2. Betrayal on pg. 114 – to give over to an enemy or be unfaithful 3. Adversaries on pg. 79 – someone that struggles with an enemy 4. Incoherent on pg. 56 – not clear or able to understand 5. Cornucopia on pg. 58 – container shaped like a horn or a cone Skills & Strengths: Write down all of the skills and strengths for Katniss and Peeta that will help them in the Hunger Games. Most of Peeta’s skills/strengths are found in Chp. 7 pgs. 89-92. Some of Katniss’s are found there too. But, some of hers are in earlier chapters pgs. 10, 21, 50. Tell who the protagonist and antagonist are in the Hunger Games. Protagonist is Katniss and Peeta. The antagonist is the Capitol. 2. Peeta helps Katniss when she is 11 and at the lowest point in her life. Describe what he does to help her. (Chp. 2, pgs. 28-31) He gives her two loaves of burnt bread. 3. There are sponsors for the tributes in the Hunger Games. Describe the importance of the sponsors. (Chp. 4, pg. 56-58) They give the tributes gifts to help them in the Hunger Games. 4. Tell why Katniss shoots an arrow at the Gamemakers table during her private session (Chp. 7, pgs. 101102). She is angry that the Gamemakers are not paying attention to her during her private session. 5. Who is the narrator in the Hunger Games? Narrator is the person telling the story. Katniss 6. Tell why Haymitch is important to the tributes of District 12 (Chp. 3, pgs. 46-47). He is the person that gets sponsors set up for the tributes, a mentor to the tributes, and trains the tributes. 7. What news does Peeta reveal in his interview? (Chp. 9, pg. 130) He reveals that he loves Katniss. 8. Describe the change that Haymitch decides to make so that he can train Katniss and Peeta. What do Katniss and Peeta have to promise Haymitch in return? (Chp. 4, pg. 58). He decides to sober up so he can do a good job of training Katniss and Peeta. Katniss and Peeta promise to do what he asks them to. 9. How does Peeta help save Katniss when she recognizes the Avox girl (Chp. 6, pgs. 77-78)? Peeta pretends the Avox girl looks like a girl at their school. 10. List 3 times that Katniss has experienced internal conflict about her relationship with Peeta. Describe each experience. Read the following to help you be able to write about Katniss’s conflict. Katniss has a connection with Peeta because he gave her two loaves of burnt bread when she was at the lowest point in her life. She is worrying about being a tribute with him because she doesn’t want to have to eliminate someone who did such a kind thing for her. Peeta is talking about all of Katniss’s strengths. She wonders why they are pretending to be friends and talking up each others strengths to Haymitch. She realizes at some point they cannot be friends and will have to realize they are adversaries. Peeta decides he want to train alone. Katniss feels betrayed. She thinks that whatever connection they had has now been destroyed. She thinks that having a trust in him now is too risky because the games are about to begin. Read Chp. 2 pgs. 32-33. Read Chp. 7 pgs. 92-93. Read Chp. 8-9 pgs. 113-114.
