Prior to 1981 communication within Nigeria and between Nigeria and the outside world was not very effective. The country relied on aging Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) Lines for voice, and terrestrial microwave networks for radio, and television. International voice, video and data communications links were limited, with most of such communications services operated by the government run telecommunications monopoly. Communication Satellite in the wireless age has the potentials of bridging the digital gulf that exists between civilized and develop ingnation. If well used, communication Satellite is a potent infrastructure of addressing technology convergence for holistic national development. This paper examines Nigeria’s technological efforts so far at bridging the Digital Divide through communication Satellite. This discourse focuses on the uses and challenges of Satellite communication in Nigeria. 1.2 Statement of the Problem This focuses on the problems and prospects of digital broadcasting and satellite communication in Nigeria. The introduction of digital broadcasting and satellite communication helps in speedy dissemination of information or news 1.3 Objective of the Study The objective is to depict dark areas of what has been known and unknown about the problems and prospects of digital broadcasting and satellite communication in Nigeria. Here are the objectives that may be considered; iii a) To determine the level of influence that satellite communication has on the mass media. b) To understand the role of digital broadcasting and satellite communication in modern day journalism c) To know how effective digital broadcasting and satellite communication is in the spread of news to the Nigerian populace. d) To know the level of usage of digital broadcasting and satellite communication by media firms. e) To understand the availability of digital broadcasting and satellite communication to the receivers of news. 1.4 Research Question What influence does digital broadcasting and satellite communication have on the mass media? What is the role of digital broadcasting and satellite communication in modern day journalism? How effective is digital broadcasting and satellite communication in the spread of news? To what extent do media firms make use of satellite communication? Is this technology available to the average Nigerian? 1.5 Significance of the Study The research work will help the Nigerians especially the media to know effect of digital broadcasting and satellite communication in the disseminations of news. 1.6 Rationale of the Study It is important to note that despite the problems faced in digital broadcasting and satellite communication in Nigeria, the future holds great promises as the iv prospects are promising to both the media practitioner and the receivers of media content. 1.7 Scope of the Study The focus of this work will be to know the problems faced in digital broadcasting and satellite communication in Nigeria. Besides, as a result of vast geographical structure, time and financial constraints, the focus will however centre on using the outcome from this set of people will be used to generalize the problems and prospects of digital broadcasting and satellite communication in Nigeria. 1.8 Definition of Terms Digital: representing a varying physical quantity such as sound or light waves by means of discrete signals interpreted as numbers, usually in the binary system, as in a digital recording or digital television Broadcasting: the making and transmission of television and radio programs to a large heterogeneous society. Satellite: An object put into orbit around Earth or another planet in order to relay communications signals or transmit scientific data. Communication: The exchange of information between people, e.g. by means of speaking, writing, or using a common system of signs or behavior. Prospects: A chance or the likelihood that something will happen in the near future, especially something desirable. v TO DOWNLOAD “DIGITAL BROADCASTING AND SATELLITE COMMUNICATION: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS” COMPLETE PROJECT MATERIALS, FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY *** Read the following instructions carefully *** For Enquiries, Call: 070664545791 OR 08059648031 Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm ONLY.
