Psychology Course Description (Fall 2013)
The goal of this class is to increase our awareness of the motivations behind human behavior at
the upper high school level. The understanding of psychology will allow students the
opportunity to study human relationships across all levels of society. It is a science which
studies the thinking and behavior of organisms, especially human organisms. It involves
research, methodology, critical thinking, vocabulary, performance-based assessment,
cooperative learning, experimentation, and active learner participation.

Sociology Course Description (Spring 2014)
The goal of this class is to increase our awareness of diverse human characteristics and group
behaviors. The understanding of Sociology will allow students the opportunity to study human
relationships across all levels of society. It is a science which studies the demographics and
behavior of people in groups. Understanding Sociology involves research, methodology, critical
thinking, vocabulary, performance-based assessment, cooperative learning, experimentation,
and active learner participation.
Sociology Course Topics:

 Demographics (3 Weeks)
 Basic Terminology, Languages, Religions (3 Weeks)
Unit 2
 World Issues (3 Weeks)
Unit 3
 Deviance and Social Control (3 Weeks)
Unit 4
 Samples of Sociology: Micro-views (Cities) of Culture and Society: (3 Weeks)
Unit 5
 Focus Area of Sociology: example: Music, etc. (3 Weeks)
Grading Policy and Breakdown
The 9 week grades will be calculated by accumulating points in the following categories:
 60% Tests, Quizzes, Essays, and Projects
 30% Homework and in-class work
 10% Notebook Quizzes
Grading Scale
100-92 A
91-83 B
82-74 C
73-65 D
64- below F
Make-up Work




Information and class assignments can be found on my teacher website that can be
accessed from the Owen County High School Website. Through this site you will find
updates for the course along with links to the course assignments.
Make-up work is the student’s responsibility and will be provided according to the
district guidelines. For excused absences, you will receive the number of days you
missed plus 1 to complete the work that you missed.
This does not apply to long term projects since the due date is posted well in advance.
You are responsible for the work you have missed; I will not search you out. It is your
responsibility to come to me for missed work and notes from you classmates.
All late homework will take a 50% deduction in points
If you need extra help
I will be available by appointment for additional time to discuss assignments, absences, and late
work. Please approach me to set up a time to meet before or after school at a future time.
If you need to obtain missed assignments or talk about your grade, see me before or after
school (not in the middle of class).
Class Materials
 3 Ring Binder
 Students will keep all notes, handouts, and work in each unit divider in their binder
 Loose leaf College Ruled Paper
 Pen or pencil
*If you have any trouble finding these items, please go to the Youth Service Center for supplies.
Class Binder:
 Students are required to keep a class binder. Students must bring this binder to class
each day. In this binder students will keep class notes, handouts, and assignments.
 I will be giving notebook quizzes. *Note—It is important that students bring their wellorganized notebook to class each day.
Class Expectations
 Appropriate behavior is expected during all class activities.
 Respect for yourself, your classmates, and your teacher
 Responsibility – for your own actions and behaviors.
 You must do your own work. Cheating will not be tolerated and could result in a 0 for
assignments.
 Be prepared for class each day (book, assignments, notebook, writing instrument)
 Be in your seat answering the “flashback” when the bell rings
 No Hall passes will be given for any reason.
 Stay seated (unless otherwise instructed) until dismissed
 Clean up after yourself
 Absolutely NO unapproved electronic devices shall be used in class
 ALL district rules apply
Discipline
 First offence – verbal warning
 Second offence – private conference with Ms. Hall
 Third offence – parent involvement and office referral
*If offense is extremely inappropriate swifter action may be taken
