The Burn
Idea for the case or the case draft
Whenever Victor consumes a meal, he suffers a burning sensation in his chest and often,
‘vomits’ small portion of previously eaten food that tastes sour. This happens a few minutes
after finishing his last bite.
Victor’s mom brought him to the doctor.
“Hi Doctor, my son often feels a burning sensation after eating. He tried to drink water to ease
the discomfort but ended up vomiting.”, said Victor’s mom.
“Yes! I tried to gulp down water quickly but I felt worse.”, Victor added.
The doctor smiled and replied, “Here are some antacids for you. Eat them before every meal
and you will be fine.”
“Thank you, doctor.”, said both mom and son gratefully.

Experimentation (antacids, acid, water, pH scale)
Two possible investigations
1. To find out the effects of adding water to reduce acidity.
2. To find out the effects of antacids on gastric acid.
Two possible student products
1. Conduct an experiment and present findings in PowerPoint/ Poster presentation. Peer review by
classmate’s comments.
2. Conduct an experiment, video themselves and include findings, and upload on Youtube. Peer
review by classmate’s comments.
