Flow of Electricity Learning Targets

I can demonstrate that the flow of electricity in circuits requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass and can produce, light, heat, and sound. (5 th grade Readiness Standard)

 I know what can conduct or insulate electric energy (5 th Grade Readiness Standard)

electrical energy: is energy carried by tiny particles called electrons moving from one place to another in wires, light bulbs, or motors

flow of electricity: the movement of electricity through a closed circuit

conductor: allows electricity to pass through

insulator: stops the flow of electricity

series circuit: circuit in which electric current only follows one path

parallel circuit: circuit in which the electric current divides into two or more paths before recombining to complete the circuit

electric current: the flow of electricity through a conductor that can produce light, heat and sound

closed circuit or complete circuit: is the loop through which electric current travels. The loop is not broken

(like a necklace). Therefore the electricity can flow.

open circuit or incomplete circuit: has at least one break in the loop that interrupts the flow of electricity

switch: control for opening or closing a circuit
