Examples: Word Problem for Trig Ratios(Finding Sides)
1. A 25 foot ladder is leaning against a wall. If the angle formed
between the base of the ladder and the ground is 31 degrees:
a. Find the height of the wall
b. Find the distance from the base of the ladder to the wall.
2. A boat has drifted away from its anchor. If the boat is 56ft from
where the anchor was originally dropped and the angle between
the water and the rope is 29 degrees:
a. find the depth of the water from where the was originally dropped.
b. find the length of the rope
3. A 6ft person is standing in the sunshine. If the angle formed between
the person’s shadow and the ground is 12 degrees, find the length of
their shadow.
4. Using the situation in #1 above, if the wall is 42ft and the
angle between the top of the wall and the top of the ladder is 73
degrees:
a. Find the length of the ladder.
b. Find how far the base of the ladder is from the wall.
Practice
Word problems using sine, cosine, or tangent(finding sides)
1. A 30ft ladder is leaning against a wall. If the angle between the base
of the ladder and the ground is 36 degrees, find the distance from the
base of the ladder to the wall.
2. A boat has drifted 38ft away from where its anchor was dropped. If
angle between the water and the rope is 15 degrees, find the depth of
the water where the anchor was dropped.
3. A 5ft person is standing out in the sunshine. If the angle formed
between the person’s shadow and the ground is 22 degrees, find the
length of the person’s shadow.
4 A ladder is leaning against a wall. The top of the ladder is 22ft up the
wall. If the angle formed between the base of the ladder and the ground
is 35 degrees, find the length of the ladder.
5. A boat has drifted away from its anchor. The rope has extended to a
length of 45ft. If the angle between the water and the rope is 31 degrees,
find how far the boat has drifted from where the anchor was originally
dropped.
Practice
Word problems using sine, cosine, or tangent(finding sides)
6. A tree casts a shadow that is 18ft long. If the angle formed between the
ground and the base of the tree is 47 degrees, how tall is the tree?
7. A ladder is leaning against a wall. The base of the ladder is 11ft from the base
of the wall. If the angle formed between the base of the ladder and the ground
is 29 degrees, find the length of the ladder.
8. A boat has drifted away from its anchor. The depth of the water where the
anchor was originally dropped in 14ft. If the angle between the water and the rope
is 44 degrees, find the length of the rope.
