Find the volume of a prism measuring 7 meters
along the area of the base, and 12 meters high.
What is the volume of the prism?
Edge of the base= length x width= 7 x 7 = 49 x 12) Volume= 588 cubic meters
Mini-Lesson
Over the weekend, Kurt drank 9/10 of a bottle of soda
and Jonathan drank 1/2 of a bottle. How much more
soda did Kurt drink than Jonathan?
Key Words: (how much more: Meanssubtraction) ½= 5/10 + 9/10= (9/10 - 5/10) = 4/10
(simplify) = ⅖ more soda

On a hot day, Karlene poured 1/3 of a
bucket of water into a plastic wading
pool. A few minutes later she added
another 5/6 of a bucket. How much
water did Karlene pour into the pool?
Answer: Key Words (added: means addition) ⅓ + ⅚ (⅓=
2/6 + ⅚) 7/6 (improper fraction) 1 1/6
Mini-Lesson
Cindy’s cats often share a carton of cat milk. Sammy always
drinks 1/3 of the carton, Tommy always drinks 5/12 of the
carton, and Suzi always drinks 1/6 of the carton. What
fraction of the carton of cat milk is left over? __________
(Teacher should ask students what operation they need to perform 1st) + addition,
Then 5/12 + ⅓ + 1/6= 5/12 + 4/12 + 2/12= (11/12) Total 12/12 =11/12= Therefore, it means
there was 1/12 of the milk left.
