Until we joined Christ Church, I had not been a regular church attendee since I left home when I was 17. I had never thought I had time for church, there was always too much else to do that seemed more important. Now I anticipate the time, the community, and the inspiration of Christ Church, and I feel a loss when I am unable to attend. —Bob Goshen A message from the Priest Join the Choir Please join me in praying daily for peace in Syria. I have found this prayer, adapted from prayers found at www.churchofengland.org, particularly meaningful. A Prayer for Syria We pray for those damaged by the fighting in Syria. To the wounded and injured and those who are grieving: Come Lord Jesus To the terrified who are living in shock: Come Lord Jesus To the hungry and homeless, refugee and exile: Come Lord Jesus To those bringing humanitarian aid: Give protection Lord Jesus To those administering medical assistance: Give protection Lord Jesus. To those offering counsel and care: Give protection Lord Jesus. For all making the sacrifice of love: Give the strength of your Spirit and the joy of your comfort. We pray for all who are working for peace in Syria today. For international leaders holding a thread of control, for the politicians holding a thread of power, for the religious leaders holding a thread of authority, for the fighters holding a thread of influence, and the citizens clinging to a thread of hope. Bring unity through the untangled order of justice. Bring reconciliation through truthful dialogue. Bring new life through patient diplomacy, determined mediation and courageous peacemaking. We pray in the name of Christ, the Prince of Peace, our source of inspiration and confidence. Amen. Too often when you volunteer to do/join something, it becomes a lifetime commitment. How do you graciously leave or quit? I invite you to make a one month commitment, the month of September. Join me in forming a choir to sing Sunday, September 29 at 3:00 p.m. when the Bishop is here, leading our worship service. We will rehearse on Wednesdays: September 11, 18, and 25 from 7 to 8 p.m. If you wish to continue, we will begin working on music for All Saints Sunday, Advent and Christmas. Welcome aboard! FISH Finds a Home Base and September is Our Church’s Month to Volunteer! Since 1969 components of FISH have been housed in a variety of places in Clarke County, including Janie Harrison’s home, the basement of the Clarke County Court House, the barn at Parks & Recreation, in a closet at Social Services in a closet, and in the homes of its generous volunteers! As of this summer, FISH has found a home base, 36 East Main Street (the old library building) in Berryville. FISH shares this building with Help With Housing, an organization also started by our own Janie Harrison. Our Main Street address will house the FISH food pantry, a second clothing bank (our Old Chapel clothing bank continues to be open on Saturday mornings), a counseling office, space to bring records and office equipment under one roof, and a location for classes for our clients to address issues pertinent to their life situations. As of Aug. 31, the FISH food pantry will be open on Saturday and Wednesday from 9 am–noon. Our second clothing bank will open at the end of September. Volunteers for all our services are always needed and welcome; however, in the immediate, we need volunteers from Christ Church to staff our Old Chapel clothing bank Saturdays in September, 9 am to noon. September is Christ Church’s month! Please call Lisa Goshen, 955-1136 or e-mail, lisag1@hughes.net if you can devote some of your time! Thank you! The retreat will begin with lunch on the 8th and end with lunch on the 9th. The deadline for reserving your place is September 23rd. Page 4 Pilgrimage to Alabama to Honor Episcopal Church Martyr, Jonathan Daniels By Nina and Bob Randolph Each August, a Pilgrimage is held in Hayneville, Alabama, in honor of Jonathan Daniels. Inspired by a VMI friend and classmate of our fellow parishioner, Tom Peyton, we traveled to Alabama to participate in the Pilgrimage scheduled for August 10. First a word about Jonathan Daniels. He was valedictorian of the VMI class of 1961 and a seminarian at the Episcopal Divinity School (“EDS”), Cambridge, MA, on “Blood Sunday” March 7, 1963. On that day, Alabama state troopers and a sheriff’s posse attacked civil rights demonstrators at the Edmund Pettus Bridge as they began their march from Selma to Montgomery in support of equal rights for Blacks. Shortly thereafter, Daniels left the Seminary for Selma in response to Martin Luther King’s call for white clergy to come to Selma to march alongside their African American brothers and sisters, providing a modicum of protection, as the marchers renewed their efforts to depart Selma to walk to Montgomery to promote voter registration. After two previously failed attempts, the marchers left Selma on March 16 and arrived at the Alabama State Capitol on March 25th. Although most clergy and other white participants left Alabama at the end of the March, Jonathan stayed on and continued to work on voter registration issues in Alabama’s “Black Belt” counties, Dallas (Selma) and Lowndes. On August 14th, Daniels, Father Richard Morrisroe, a Catholic priest, and a number of African American students, were arrested and jailed in Hayneville, Lowndes County, where they stayed until August 20th. Upon release, Jonathan, Father Morrisroe and two of the students went to the local store (the Cash Store) to get cold drinks where they were met by Tom Coleman, a Lowndes County “special deputy” brandishing a shotgun who told them the store was closed and ordered them off the premises with racially charged expletives. As Coleman leveled his gun at one of the students, Ruby Sales, Jonathan pushed her to the ground and took the full blast of the shotgun which killed him instantly. Coleman then shot Father Morrisroe in the back, severely wounding him. Coleman was subsequently acquitted of both crimes by an all-white jury in Hayneville after 20 minutes of deliberation. Jonathan’s death dramatized the extent of discrimination against African Americans and galvanized support for the civil rights movement in the Episcopal Church. In 1991, the Church designated Jonathan as a martyr, an exemplar of those that give their life for others in the spirit of Christian sacrifice, and established August 14th as a day of Remembrance for Jonathan and all martyrs of the civil rights movement. We arrived in Montgomery on August 9 and visited the spot, now commemorated by the State of Alabama, where Rosa Parks refused to get off the bus thus precipitating the Montgomery bus boycott. On Saturday, March 10, we drove to Hayneville for the day of Pilgrimage and Remembrance for Jonathan and Alabamans who were killed in the struggle for equal rights in that state. The Bishop of Atlanta and the Assistant Bishop of Alabama led the Pilgrimage of approximately 300 people, which included Ruby Sales, seminarians from Sewanee and the Episcopal Divinity School, a number of Episcopal ministers from Alabama and neighboring states and veterans of the struggle for equal rights during the 1960s. Hayneville is a small village, barely bigger than Boyce, so the pilgrimage from the Confederate Monument in the town square to the jail where Jonathan was held in abominable conditions, thence to the Cash Store where Jonathan was martyred and back to the courthouse for a service of Holy Communion could be covered in a space of four blocks. There were many emotional moments during that day, but one of the most moving took place in the courthouse prior to the Eucharist when organizers called the roll of martyrs, including Jonathan, who had given their lives in Alabama to the cause of securing equal rights for all Americans. At the calling of the name of each martyr, a participant holding a poster size picture of that person would move to the front as the speaker described the often harrowing events that ended with the taking of the martyr’s life. At the end of the roll call, we could see twenty larger than life size faces looking out at us challenging us to make a stand against oppression and the denial of basic human rights whenever we have the means at our disposal to do so. On the Sunday of our departure, we went to the State Capitol to stand on the steps where Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at the end of the March from Selma, in the shadow of a larger than life statue of Jefferson Davis. We then walked a block down the street to the Dexter Avenue Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Church where Dr. King was pastor from 1954 to 1960 and helped organize the Montgomery bus boycott. Our figurative journey and pilgrimage along the way taken by Jonathan Daniels in 1965 reminded us how far we have come as a Church and Nation during the past 48 years, but also how much further we have to march as Christians to secure the blessings of peace, justice and equal rights for which we all earnestly pray every Sunday.
