CHAPTER FIVE LESSON 1
A. Vocabulary
1. Nutrition is the science that studies the substances in food and how the body uses
them.
2. Nutrients are the substances in food that your body needs.
3. Carbohydrates the main source of energy for your body.
4. Fiber is the tough, stringy part of raw fruits and vegetables, whole wheat, and other
grains, which you cannot digest.
5. Proteins are essential for growth and repair of all the cells in your body.
6. Fats another source of energy
7. Vitamins are substances that help regulate body functions.
8. Minerals are elements in foods that help your body work properly.
9. Water carries nutrients around your body and is essential to life.
B. Notes
Food:
 Gives the body energy
 Provides building blocks to help with growth and repair of cells
 Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Carbohydrates:
 Simple carbohydrates (sugars)
 Complex carbohydrates (starchy foods)
Fats:
 Carry certain vitamins in your blood and help keep your skin healthy
 Do not eat too much fat it may contribute to weight gain, and other health problems
such as: heart disease and cancer.
Vitamins:
 Water-soluble vitamins must be replaced every day (Vitamins C and B complex)
 Fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in your body longer (Vitamins A,D,E, and K)
Water:
 Helps with digestion
 Removes waste from the body
 Cools the body off
 Drink 6-8 cups a day
