Imperialism
Nationalism
Nationalism
•Definition- a devotion to one’s nation.
•This helps unify the people of a country
•However, it will also create competition
between countries
•Especially between Germany, AustriaHungary, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, and
France
What is it exactly they are competing for?
EVERYTHING
•Land
•Materials
•Trade
The country with the most is the greatest
Imperialism
This nationalist pride is going to lead to imperialism.
• Definition- a policy in which a strong nation seeks
to dominate other countries politically,
economically, and socially.
• Hence, the scramble for Africa!
• Remember, the more countries you take over the
greater nation you are!
Alliance System
• Since all these big and powerful countries are taking
over the smaller countries need to find a way to
protect themselves from being taken over.
• In order to protect themselves the smaller countries
are going to make alliances with stronger countries.
• Definition: an agreement between two or more
countries to give each other help if it’s needed.
Militarism
• Also because of imperialism nations are going to
increase military spending. This will lead to
militarism
• Definition- development of armed forces and their
use as a tool of diplomacy
• All these major powers are going to build up their
military because if their military is weaker than the
others that means they can be taken over.
