Objective
I love math. And whatever math-related career path I go down, I would
like to give back to the community. Currently I’m leaning towards being
a math professor.
Experience
Macy’s Sales Associate
10/2011-current, Southdale Macy’s
As a team member, I not only direct customers to specific items,
but I help them to determine what they want when they are
unsure. I am responsible for opening Macy’s accounts, figuring
out how to locate merchandise for a customer when unavailable in
our store, and following up with customers either in person or over
the phone. Other duties include cash handling, opening/closing
duties, and prioritizing tasks within my department.
SMART Peer Learning Consultant
08/2008-12/2011 SMART, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
I tutor fellow students in various levels of math. I also help students to
navigate talking to professors I, studying for quizzes/exams, and how to
find other resources. Besides the day-to-day tutoring, I’ve also lead a
workshop for the Calculus final. For the workshop, I constructed a packet
of problems/solutions for the students, as well as a lesson plan for the
two-hour, 30-student session. I am also responsible for directing students
as they come into SMART Learning Commons.
Math and Science Tutor
10/2006-07/2008 College Nannies and Tutors, Minnetonka, MN
I tutored middle school and high school students in math and the
sciences, mostly chemistry and physics.
I was responsible for
maintaining their files, preparing for their first visit, and communicating
with their parents and teachers as needed. I had to be aware of different
learning styles for the most efficient progress; this awareness, in addition
to coming from reading each child’s profile, came from my ability to build
personal relationships with the children and to assess their needs based
on our weekly interactions. I was also responsible for maintaining a clean
work space, as well as opening and closing duties.
Starbucks Shift Supervisor
01/2005-10/2006 Starbucks, St. Paul, MN
I started at Starbucks in January 2005 as a barista and was promoted to
shift supervisor in January 2006. I was responsible for running my shift,
which included giving all other partners their breaks, cash handling,
opening/closing the store, handling problems with pastry/milk orders,
placing our coffee and paper orders each week, and overall helping the
manager to make sure the store ran smoothly. I was also responsible for
promoting positive store morale and was the line of communication
between the manager and baristas. I had to know about all products in
the store and had to field any questions that the customer may ask but the
barista did not know.
Day Camp Group Leader
2000-2005 Emma B. Howe YMCA, Coon Rapids, MN
I maintained my own group of 10-15 middle-school-age kids. Every week
I made my own lesson plan for my group. I was responsible for
organizing games, instructing the kids, and teaching them about various
value systems in accordance with the Y. I also initiated contact with
parents when needed, either by phone after work, via note, or when they
picked up their child. I was responsible for maintaining order with my
group, whether at the YMCA or on the two fieldtrips each week.
Office Assistant
February 2002 Society of Children’s Books and Illustrators, Los Angeles, CA
I was hired for a couple of weeks to help prepare them for a conference
in New York. I prepared packages that needed to be sent ASAP. While
everyone in the office was in New York, I was responsible for letting
myself into the office and doing paperwork until the mail came, at which
point I sorted everyone’s mail. Then I had to close the office and set the
alarm. After my first day of work, my employer called to say they were so
impressed that they were giving me a two dollar/hour raise.
Traffic Engineer
1998-1999 Anoka County Highway Department, Anoka, MN
I drove myself to various sites, set-up equipment to gather traffic data,
then returned to collect the data. I input data into a computer and then
made various charts for each site, and then created a file for each. I was
also responsible for maintenance of department’s cars and trucks,
distributing office memos, and other office duties.
