11AA Final Exam: Prezi Reading Map Due June 4th – 3rd Block Due June 5th – 4th Block A Prezi is an interactive, online presentation tool that offers templates for movement, connection, and explanation. For this project, you will create a Prezi to show comparisons between the literature read in class, as well as between the literature and our contemporary society. Required Literature to be Included Third Block – Year Long Four Assigned Novels from our year’s study Four Choice Novels Fourth Block – Semester Long “The Scarlet Letter” “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” “Of Mice and Men” Modernism Play (DofS or TGM) “The Glass Castle” Two Choice Novels The Literature Frames - For each required piece: Write an “analytical summary”: a 2-3 sentence summary of the piece’s plot, followed by a 2-3 sentence explanation of the theme, symbolism, “ism”, or other literary device showcased in the novel. Make sure to start with title and author in first sentence. In your analysis, state what is showcased and then explain how, by detailing the exact elements of the piece that prove your analytical point. These summaries should be written without I, me, my, or you. They should include elevated, academic diction and enticing details. The Connection Frames Connections need to be analytical and deep, full of exact details that showcase insightful thought and thorough explanation. These should be 5-10 sentences in length and focus on connecting character, theme, and literary techniques/author’s choices – not simple surface connections like “both include vampires” or “both take place in Seattle.” If you can’t discuss the deeper elements of the connection in 5-10 sentences, it is not an acceptable connection. Your explanations should include details from the elements compared in order to prove the connection exists. Don’t just say it is there – prove it is there! Include EIGHT of the following – leaving no piece of literature “unconnected”: A connection between one of your choice novels and one of the assigned books read in class – explain a meaningful similarity or contrast between characters, theme, conflict, or literary device. A connection between two assigned novels from class -explain a meaningful similarity or major contrast between characters, theme, conflict, or literary device. A connection between two of your choice novels -explain a meaningful similarity or major contrast between characters, theme, conflict, or literary device. A connection between a book and a song – explain how the lyrics of the song relate to a conflict, to a character, or to a theme of the literature. A connection between a book and a movie/television show – explain the similarities between the characters, conflicts, or themes of the two storylines. A connection between a poem we read in class and a book – explain a meaningful similarity or contrast between the mood, symbolism, conflicts, or messages of the two works of literature. A connection between a book and a personal experience or personal belief - be sure to explain your experience or belief in detail and then tell how it relates to the book. A connection between a book and a recent news article (published later than 2007) – explain how the events or main point detailed in the article relates to the book. A connection between a book and a TED talk or This American Life Podcast - explain how the main point detailed in the piece relates to the novel or play chosen. A connection between a novel and a spoken word poem - explain how the main point detailed in the piece relates to the novel or play chosen. Grading Rubric Writing and Visual Appeal 50 points Prezi should include all parts listed in assignment. Writing should be elevated, clear, exact, and academic in tone. Prezi should look neat and polished, not messy and thrown together with lack of effort. Analytical Summaries 20 points each Connections 20 points each Summaries should detail the basic plot line of the piece, then provide an analytical insight into the piece that covers a theme, use of literary device, or “ism” showcased. Writing should be specific and exact, showcasing knowledge of each novel. Each novel should be compared to at least one other element in a written explanation on theme, character, conflict, setting, or literary devices. These should be detailed and thorough, analytical and deep. Writing is meant to persuade of the existence of the connection, not just to say it exists. Extra Credit: Students may add extra novels to their Prezis – including a summary for the piece and connecting it to an existing novel in presentation– for extra points. These novels need to have been read during the student’s 11 th grade year. Extra credit will only be counted if appropriate effort has been shown in completing required parts of Prezi.
