Peer Tutoring is held on Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. in Dey Hall. Map How does Peer Tutoring Work? The demand for support in a particular course determines how tutoring services are provided. When demand is light, one-on-one tutoring may be available. During busy times, tutoring may happen in small groups, most of which are limited to three students at a time. When working in a small group is necessary, the peer tutoring supervisors determine the group size and length of tutor time available. Can the tutors help me with my homework? Tutors can help you understand the concepts needed to complete your assignments, but they cannot help you complete the work itself if it is to be graded. See the UNC Honor Code for more information. Where is the Learning Center’s peer tutoring offered? Dey Hall is located in the quad adjacent to Wilson Library. We are located immediately inside the entrance from the quad. What are the hours for tutoring? Peer tutoring is offered 6-9pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the semester. We do not tutor on holidays or over spring break. What time should I arrive for tutoring? We recommend that you arrive earlier rather than later, especially if you wish to have more oneon-one time with a tutor. Demand for tutoring at 6:00 pm is typically low, but as the evening progresses the demand for tutoring increases. What should I do before coming to peer tutoring? To maximize your time with a peer tutor, attempt to complete your homework prior to coming to peer tutoring. This practice will allow you to communicate to the tutor the specific skills and concepts you need support with. The same is true when coming to peer tutoring for assistance to prepare for an exam. Studying beforehand will help you ask the tutor specific questions. What subjects are available for tutoring? We maintain a list of courses available for peer tutoring on our website. How much time do I get with my tutor? Each student is usually allotted 20 minutes; if you are in a group of three, the entire group gets a total of one hour. If you are working one-on-one with a tutor, you will get 20 minutes, but those times may be extended if there are no other students waiting. Can I just come in the day before my exam for help? You may come to Dey Hall any time for help, but we recommend coming to tutoring regularly to ensure success. Demand may be high just before your exam, particularly in large classes. Can I make an appointment? Peer tutoring at Dey Hall is available as a walk-in only service. We recommend arriving as early as possible if you wish to avoid a wait. However, you can make individual appointments for academic coaching during the week at the Learning Center. Who are the tutors? Our tutors are students who received high grades in the classes they tutor and who have been trained in peer tutoring prior to working with students. Tutors are enrolled in EDUC 387 and supervised by instructors throughout the semester. Can I request a specific tutor? All tutors are trained and ready to help, so we encourage you to try out a variety of tutors if your favorite tutor is busy. If you request a specific tutor, you may have to wait for the tutor to finish with students in front of you. Can I get help in more than one subject? You may receive help in any and all subjects we tutor. We do not impose limitations beyond the times that we have to offer services. What if my course isn’t listed for tutoring in Dey Hall? We can likely still help you if you come in for tutoring. Historically, we have been able to help students in classes we do not officially offer by focusing on specific concepts rather than the class as a whole. Students may also make an appointment at the Learning Center to work with a coach on their studying skills for any course. Can I get documentation that I attended tutoring? Yes, we can provide documentation of your attendance; please see someone at the check-in table for this. Do I need to bring anything with me to tutoring? You should bring your text and class notes as well as any other study material you have. Bringing in your resources and coming prepared with questions helps the tutor help you. Is there a charge for tutoring? Peer tutoring is free of charge for all UNC students. Can tutors help with writing assignments? No. Please visit UNC’s Writing Center for assistance with course papers, application essays, or other writing tasks or support. You can make an appointment online (add link) or drop in at Write Night on Wednesday evenings 5:30-8 at the UL. Can my friend come with me to tutoring? Space is often limited, so we ask that you not bring anyone who won’t be participating in the tutoring session. If you are both seeking help for the same class, you may request to work together. Can I work with a tutor outside of Dey Hall? Some of our tutors elect to tutor privately and independently for a fee, but you would need to negotiate directly with your tutor if you want more help than they provide in Dey Hall. Keep in mind that our tutors are students also and may not have the extra time to offer or may not have elected to tutor outside of the Learning Center Dey Hall hours. For more options, we have a list of private tutors on our website. What other tutoring services exist on campus? A list of other tutoring services on campus is below.
