Cell Project Option 1: Cell Simile Project Project Description: Individually or in groups of two, you must develop an original cell simile poster. Examples/ideas for cell simile include: “The Cell is Like a City,” a car, house, or garden. You must use your simile and describe 8 organelles and what role/position/placement they would be in your simile. Example: The principal’s office in a school is like the nucleus in a cell. The office contains the principal, who is in charge of running the school. The nucleus houses the DNA, which controls all cell activities. Posters will be evaluated by accuracy of organelle descriptions, design and creativity. Grading breakdown will be provided. Important Dates: Outline of simile idea (main analogy/simile you/your group will use, at least two organelles and their analogies written out, and specific jobs assigned to group members): DUE FRIDAY 3/9/12 You will have library computer lab or ATC lab time: - Monday 3/12, Tuesday 3/13, and Wednesday 3/14 Completed cell simile poster: DUE THURSDAY 3/14/12 Important Components: A title that states your simile Labeled picture illustrating your simile A table on the poster listing: 8organelles, the objects you/your group chose (what each organelle represents in your simile), and the main function of each organelle Sources provided: even if you used notes and/or the textbook must cite these sources (just cite class notes as “Class Notes” but must cite textbook using MLA citation format) Cell Project Option 2: Cell Parts Travel Brochure Project Description: Individually or in groups of two, your job is to produce a travel brochure to attract visitors to spend money to visit an animal or plant cell. You want to entice visitors to visit your destination. You can think about your cell as a huge amusement park, an interesting travel destination (island), or even a small roadside attraction. In your brochure, you must describe/explain and draw at least 8 “attractions” (organelles) that will amaze your potential customers. You may define the organelles as they are in a cell, or you may come up with analogous descriptions. Example: “Be sure to visit the Golgi Body Center inside the gift shop, and have purchases gift wrapped for you before you leave.” (This example compares the golgi apparatus (packing and shipping center) with the gift wrap station at a gift shop--an analogy/simile). Humor and creativity are encouraged. Brochures will be evaluated by accuracy of organelle descriptions, design and creativity. Grading breakdown will be provided. Important Dates: Outline of brochure (main ideas and drawn layout of brochure, specific jobs assigned to group members): DUE FRIDAY 3/9/12 You will have library computer lab or ATC lab time: - Monday 3/12, Tuesday 3/13, and Wednesday 3/14 Completed brochure: DUE THURSDAY 3/14/12 Important Components: A creative title for your brochure and travel agency Labeled pictures illustrating your attraction (must have a picture for every organelle) Thorough descriptions of the eight organelles Headings for each section Sources provided: even if you used notes and/or the textbook must cite these sources (just cite class notes as “Class Notes” but must cite textbook using MLA citation format) Cell Project Grade Breakdown: Cell Simile: Point Value: 5= Excellent 4= Good 3= Fair/Average 2= Basic 1= Poor 0= Not included Outline of simile turned in Friday 3/9 Includes at least 8 well described organelles Labeled picture illustrating simile Table listing organelles, functions, simile representation Project is neat, well organized, and easy to comprehend Contains creative component (nice use of color, drawings, title etc) Accurately illustrates understanding of organelle functions Time management and group work (how well did you work with your partner) Grammar and spelling; written work is without errors in language mechanics Proper citations (MLA format) Total Points Earned: /50 Cell Travel Brochure: Point Value: 5= Excellent 4= Good 3= Fair/Average 2= Basic 1= Poor 0= Not included Outline of travel brochure turned in Friday 3/9 Includes at least 8 well described organelles Labeled pictures illustrating your attraction (must have a picture for every organelle) Headings and a creative title for travel brochure and agency Project is neat, well organized, and easy to comprehend Contains creative component (nice use of color, drawings, title etc) Accurately illustrates understanding of organelle functions Time management and group work (how well did you work with your partner) Grammar and spelling; written work is without errors in language mechanics Proper citations (MLA format) Total Points Earned: /50
