1. Diagram the shoot structure of a flowering plant. Neatness and accuracy will count. Draw,
define, and clearly label all of the following structures on your diagram: apical bud, axillary bud,
stem, vegetative shoot, node, internode, and reproductive shoot. (Max 2 pts)
2. Draw an accurate diagram illustrating the life cycle of a moss (Bryophyta). Label and define the
following terms: mature sporophyte, meiospores, female and male gametophytes, antheridium,
archegonium, zygote, egg, and sperm. Clearly indicate on your diagram when specific structures
are haploid or diploid, and where meiosis and mitosis occurs. Again, neatness and accuracy
counts. (Max 4 pts).
3. Draw an accurate diagram illustrating the life cycle of a fern (Pterophyta). Label and define the
following terms: mature sporophyte, fiddlehead, frond, sporangium, sori, gamephyte, rhizoids,
antheridium, archegonium, zygote, egg, sperm, and prothalli. Again, neatness and accuracy
counts. (Max 4 pts).
4. List 4 phyla of gymnosperms. Under each phyla list key characteristics of the phylum, provide an
example species, and describe the natural history of the example species that you selected.

5. Draw an accurate diagram of a lily flower. Illustrate, define, and label the following parts:
carpel, stigma, filament, sepal, pedicle ovule, anther, petal, ovary, stamen, and stigma. Indicate
the male and female parts of the flower. Again, neatness and accuracy counts. (Max 2 pts).
6. Illustrate the germination of a typical eudicot seed and monocot seed. Label and define the
following terms: plumule, hypocotyl, radical, cotyledon(s), pericarp, epicotyl, coleoptiles,
endosperm, primary root, true leaves, and secondary root. Also, define and give the function of
the following terms: micropyle, double fertilization, cotyledons, and endosperm. Finally,
neatness and accuracy counts. (Max 4 pts).
