Period 3 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Lord of the Flies-Summery Ralph realizes that the group is becoming more uncivilized, Jack constantly insists on hunting, and despite his instincts, he still goes on to the hunt. They go hunting for a big boar, but during the chase it gets away. Later Robert is nearly killed in a re-enactment of the hunt with Robert starring the boat. Ralph begins to lose power, as Jack gains leverage from the hunt and with the group overall. Jack offers to go onto the next hunt, as they climb a mountain, Jack gets terrified as he sees something. The other boys climb up, terrified they run down the hill with the beastie right behind them. Lord of the Flies - Questions What escalates the struggle between Ralph and Jack? How does jack gain more leverage compared to Ralph? How does the boys savagery relate to the real world? How does the almost murdered Robert contribute to the wilderness and the increasing savagery of the group? What turns Ralph into a savage? WORD Diminishing PAGE # 135 Impassable 127 Antagonism 129 Scuttling 131 DEFINITION Make someone or something seem less valuable or impressive Impossible to travel over or along active hostility or opposition run hurriedly Spluttering 132 Spitting or choking REASON/DISCUSSION I chose this word because I didn’t know what is meant. Didn’t know what it stood for Didn’t understand what it meant exactly Didn’t know what it meant Didn’t understand what sounds PAGE # & PARAGRAPH “’I hit him! The spear stuck in-‘….’’’He’s gone’’’ ‘’’ I hit him”’, said Ralph again, ‘and the spear stuck in a bit!’ He felt the need of witness. ‘Didn’t you see me?’ Maurice nodded” (124) “’ He was coming along the path. I threw like this-‘Robert snarled at him. Ralph entered into the play and everybody laughed. Presently they were all jabbing at Robert who made mock rushes……Robert squealed in mock terror, then in real pain. ‘Ow! Stop it! You’re hurting!’……Ralph carried away by sudden thick excitement, grabbed Eric’s spear and jabbed at Robert with it. ‘Kill him! Kill him!”’ (125) “Ralph planned his toilet. He would like to have a pair of scissors cut this hair- he flung the mass back-cut this filthy hair right back to half an inch. He would like to have a bath, a proper wallow with soap. He passed his tongue experimentally over his teeth and decided that a toothbrush would come handy too. Then there were his nails-Ralph turned his hand over and examined them. They were bitten down.” (119) it meant REASON FOR PICKING I chose this passage from the story because it shows Ralph’s character change for example how he is starting to become like Jack due to the fact he is getting excited after hunting and wounding a boar. I chose this passage from the story because it brings shock and confusion to the reader, this is because the reader would have not expected such savage like behaviour from Ralph. They wouldn’t have expected Ralph to get so carried away like Jack and almost killing Robert. DISCUSSION Why do you think Ralph was so excited? I chose this paragraph from the story in particular because it shows the length of time they (Hunters) have been stranded on the Island for, for example in the paragraph it states how Ralph wants his filthy long hair back to short, wants a proper bath and wants a toothbrush to clean his teeth. If you were Ralph would you be able to survive without hygienic maintenance for a long period of time? Why or why not? Would you have expected such a behaviour from Ralph? If so why? 1- in chapter 7 page 119 Ralph states "...he would like to have a bath, a proper wallow with soap. He passes his tongue experimentally over his teeth and decided that a toothbrush would come in handy too." This quote reminds me of the time i was at a dance competition and it was ten pm, I was sweaty and really tired and I wanted nothing more than to change clothes, take a shower and sleep but I couldn't because I forgot my hotel key and my parents could not take me back to the hotel until eleven because the competition was not over and they were helping out. This is like Ralph's situation because I was in need of assistance that I could not provide on my own (a way home) and I really needed to Shower like Ralph. 2- when Ralph, Jack and some other boys team up on Robert and start beating him up it reminds me of the anti- bullying videos we hade to watch in school because there was always a boy who was teamed up on like Robert and no one did anything to help/ save him. Chapter 8 Gift for the Darkness Summary In the eighth chapter called “Gift for the Darkness”, Ralph, Jack and Piggy are in distress over the recent discovery that the beast is real and it is keeping them from the fire on the mountain. Jack then questions Ralph’s ability to lead the group, so in an attempt to become leader jack makes the children vote, after he is rejected jack furiously leaves the group along with Robert, Roger, and Maurice. Ralphs group is then left troubled on their current state of affairs but their spirits are lifted when piggy comes to the conclusion that they should build a fire on the beach. Meanwhile jack and his group of boys go off hunting and find a mother pig with its young, they attack the pig with spears, wounding it, and then chase it into the jungle. After some time chasing, the pig finally gives in do to its pain. Jack and his posse kill it mercilessly, then leave its head on a spike as an offering to the beast, they then make a plan to raid ralphs group and steal their fire, all is watched by Simon. Back on the beach ralph and piggy lay on the sand, jack and his group do as planned and steal a branch from their fire, putting it out in the process, Jack offers them to join his group and have a feast, then disappears back into the island. Afterwards ralph calls a meeting and tries to motivate his group but is at a loss for words, some of the members are tempted by the though of eating meat. Meanwhile Simon is still tormented by the pig head that he calls the “lord of the flies” and falls unconscious. Connections: This reading at first reminded me of “The Walking Dead” a television series. This reading reminded me of this because Jack and Ralph are two leaders who are in disagreement on how the group should be lead, causing jack to leave. A similar situation occurs in the second season of the walking dead, two leaders Rick and Shane are in disagreement throughout most of the season on how the group of survivors should be lead, in the end causing Rick to kill Shane. Connector I can connect to chapter 8 because in this chapter the boys are breaking up and taking sides. Everyone wants to do everything differently there not woking as one big group anymore. this connects to me because i have been in situations where people have taken sides and everyone has wanted something different. When you get in tough situations usually people either split or stick together. I was in tough situation. We split up because we were all fed up with the situation and think differently. The people I was in a disagreement with reminded me of jack, because they wanted it their way or no way and thought they were always right. vocabulary Contemptuously Go up and see, said jack contemptuously, and good riddance. (page 136) Definition- when you think someone or something is worth nothing. the word contemptuously is about showing someone dislikes or disrespects. Incomprehension Simon broke off and turned to piggy who was looking at him with an expression of derisive incomprehension. ( page 141) Definition- much surprised Sufficiently The skirts of the forest and the scar were familiar near the conch and the shelters and sufficiently friendly in day light. (page 143) definition- just getting by or just enough. Questioner/Discussion Director Possible discussion questions or topics for today: 1. Why are the boys losing control? What is causing this? Have they been together for too much time? 2. Are they going to do anything about the beastie? They know about it but are they too scared to go into the forest and find it? 3. What are they going to do about jack? Are they going to get him under control or just split up from him? 4. Is Piggy going to stand up for himself? Or will he keep letting Jack push him around? 5. Will Ralph step down as leader? Or will he continue to be a leader? Vocabulary Enricher Blundered on page 219- to make a stupid or careless mistake; act or speak clumsily. Thicket on page 204- a dense group of bushes or trees. Inquisitive on page 205- unduly curious about the affairs of others; prying. Inimical on page 207- tending to obstruct or harm. Antiphonal on page 209- sung, recited, or played by two groups. Ululation on page 210- is a long high-pitched vocal sound resembling a howl. Crepitation on page 216- a crackling or rattling sound. The reason why I chose all these words is because most of these words are very difficult to get. Chapter 8: Gift for the Darkness 1. Q: What is the exactly gift for the darkness? A: Jack’s tribe hunts a black-pink maternal pig in the forest at night. 2. Q: What is Simon’s suggestion about what can be done to away from the beast after Jack leaves? Q: How Jack’s tribe gets fire to cooking the pig without Piggy’s glasses? A: They paint their faces and scared the boys who are around the fire, then grab halfburnt branches and run away along the beach. 7. Q: “Piggy stood on the platform, the white conch gripped in his hands” (155) “’The Chief has spoken’” (155). What two quotations tell us? A: Jack and Ralph have broken up two groups officially; there are two chiefs on the island. Chapter 9 Chapter 9 Summary: Simon is lost in the forest. Piggy and Ralph are wondering where he is. So they checked at Jacks camp, and he wasn’t there. When they got there they were eating around the fire, and Jacks group noticed Piggy and Ralph standing in the trees watching what was happening. Jack called out to Piggy and Ralph and told them to eat some food that they have made. Jack made sure everyone ate what they wanted to eat and that they were full. Then Jack tried to make a deal with Piggy saying because Jack gave him food and that his hunter will protect him from the beast that he wants one of them to join his tribe. Ralph says he is going to join his tribe and goes to blow the conch it then starts to rain and Jack says for everyone to start to dance. Roger became the pig in the middle of the dance and started charging at Jack who was side stepping and the littl’uns ran and jumped on the outside of the circle. They then started hearing things coming from the forest and yelling to kill the beast Simon then came through the forest and was mistaken for the beast and was killed by Jacks tribe. Let them go, “said Ralph, uneasily, “I don’t care.” Although Ralph said he doesn’t care about people went to Jack’s party, he does care about his position in people’s heart. He is still jealous about people went to Jack’s party and Jack is acting like a real leader. This is likes what we have in our daily life, when someone take position for your place in school or home, you won’t say anything from your mouth or say you won’t care about it, but in your deep heart, you still feel uncomfortable. This is why people sometime is emotion. Piggy and Ralph came to the edge of the grassy, platform and the boys, as they noticed them, fell silent one by one only one boy next to Jack was talking, this situation is as same as what we have in our life, hen someone has his party or meeting, when others came into disturb. The atmosphere is very embarrassed. People usually will stop talking and attracted by the people who came into and disturb, and keep their eyes on them. Question/Discussion Director How does Loss of Innocence the main theme? Simon is missing and no one can find him. Why does Jack feel chanting would save them from the storm? Protect them from the rain and bring happiness to the tribe. Why is the chapter called a view to death? Simon gets killed by Ralph, Piggy, Jack and his tribe. What is the main event in the chapter? The main event is Simon being mistaken as a beastie and getting killed by everyone. What motivates Ralph and Piggy to make the choices they make? They chose to go to Jacks party to see if Simon was there. Maybe they were trying to protect themselves from the beastie. Each season on The Walking Dead, Rick and his group lose more and more of their humanity. In the most recent episode they literally butchered Gareth and his group and felt justified in doing so. In the Lord of the Flies the boys savagely murder Simon and then all of them act as if it was not a big deal at all. In both storylines survival has come down to “Kill or be killed”. Connection to Book: It also reminded me of the book The Hunger Games. In that book humans are hunting humans and in the Lord of the Flies Jack and his group are hunting humans as well. Connection to World Events: I also thought about the recent ISIS attacks. They have posted videos of the beheadings for the world to see and to show their power. In the Lord of the Flies the boys stick the butchered pig’s head on a stick and leave it for all to see. Chapter 10 Chapter 10 - Serena Summary: Ralph realizes everyone has joined Jacks group now except for him, Piggy, and Samneric and a few of the littluns. In the previous chapter they had killed Simon thinking he was the beast. The four in Ralph’s group, proclaim they all left the feast before the murder happened so they would try to convince the others that they weren't apart of the killing, although they knew that they were there and took part in it. Jack has become the leader of his group and they have lost most of their civilization by now. Jack had one of his boys from his group tie up someone for Jack to beat because he made him angry. They have become obsessed with hunting things and the thought of killing living things and beating them. One of the hunters from Jacks group attacks the shelter that Piggy was in while they were sleeping, Ralph steps up and beats the hunter, biting his fingers and beating his face. Piggy protects the conch from someone stealing it, meanwhile Jack steals Piggy’s glasses to use for his own needs. Key Points: 1. The boys in Ralph’s group try to come up with ways to defend themselves for what happened to Simon. 2. Robert ties up Wilfred to be beaten by Jack 3. Jacks group attacks Piggy’s shelter while he is sleeping 4. Ralph beats a guy from Ralph's group 5. The title to this chapter is somewhat irrelevant-there is not really a point to the conch anymore because they have all separated, no reason to call everyone together or to be used to talk Connections: When Ralph looses it and beats up the boy from Jacks group it seems as if he lost it at this point. It seemed as if all the anger that has been built up from the frustration and responsibility that he has felt is all on him and the fear and at that moment is when it all came out. He completely lost it, and took everything out on the boy and beat him to the extreme. This reminds me of what happens a lot of the time to everyone, we get stressed out and worried and frustrated and angry and a bunch of other things and all the builds up and sometimes we let it build up for too long and one day it all comes out. Everyone has a different way of showing it though; some cry, some scream, some people punch walls, some people write about it etc. As for Ralph he lost it on the guy, although this seemed so violent and vicious it’s understandable. They have been on that island now for a long time without adults and little knowledge because they are young and it is far from easy so it finally came out. Another thing this chapter reminds me of is how some people loose their sanity to get what they want and that is what is happening with Jack. He has lost his civilization and respect for everything to get to be the one on top. Chapter 11 Lord of the Flies – Chapter 11 Summarizer After Jack’s tribe stole Piggy’s glasses, Ralph and Piggy struggle to make a fire on the beach. They plan to go to Jack’s tribe and demand for the glasses back. However, when they arrive, things don’t go exactly as planned. Jack refuses to give up the glasses and he and Ralph start to fight. Ralph continues to explain to the boys the significance of the signal fire and being rescued. Jack doesn’t care to listen, and orders his guards to tie up Sam and Eric. This infuriates Ralph and the two face off in another fight. Piggy cries in agony and suddenly, Roger pushes a boulder from the top of the mountain. It rolls down and after ralph dodges it, it strikes Piggy. The conch that Piggy’s holding crushes into pieces and he falls down the mountain where he faces death down at the rocks underneath. The boys then spear Ralph before he runs off into the jungle alone, and they force Sam and Eric to join their tribe. Questioner/ Discussion Director 1. Is Jack there for the group? 2. Is he a savage yet? 3. Why is he addicted to killing pigs 4. Why is Jack against rules/conch 5. Does Jack like piggy? Why or why not 6. Whose a better leader Jack or Ralph? Why? Connected Own experiences: • being a leader like Ralph • team work • arguments with someone At school or in my community: • different groups i school get into fights • people bullying others Stories in the news: • people getting in plane crashes • lost children • deaths Similar events at other time and places: •arguments •challenges •different generations experiencing the same thing (ex:80 vs 90s) Other people or problems that you are reminded of? • having to do new things without a parents help • being excluded Between this book and other writings on the same topic or by the same author? • lost Lord of the Flies – Chapter 11 Vocabulary Enricher Luminous (p. 187) – bright or shining light, especially in darkness Myopia (p. 187) – lack of imagination, intellectual insight Multitudinous (p. 191) – very numerous Propitiating (p. 192) – win or regain the favour by doing something that pleases them Impentrable (p. 193) – Impossible to enter through Pinnacle (p. 193) – high, pointed rock Snigger (p.193) – a snicker, disrespectful laugh Diminish (p. 194) – make something less valuable/important Cessation (p.198) – the fact that something’s being brought to an end Questioner 1. When Piggy holds up the conch and tries to tell the boys to stop fighting, Roger pushes over a boulder that lands on Piggy and shatters the conch. 2. Ralph and Piggy decide to visit Jack's camp because Piggy was tired of being blind and wanted to demand for Jack to give him back his 'specs'. 3. The reaction that Jack's tribe gave Ralph's talk of rescue was a large amount of laughter. 4. When Roger 'edges' past the cheif, he really intends to push him. 5. The irony to Piggy's question, "What more can [Jack] do than he has?" is that in the encounter later on in the chapter, Piggy dies and Jack starts a fight with Ralph. Discussion 1. Whose death was more upsetting? Simon's or Piggy? Why? 2. Why do you think Roger pushed the boulder over? 3. Do you think it was weak of Ralph to run into the forest and escape his fight with Jack? 4. Why do you think 'Samneric' didn't join the tribe? Chapter 11 Connector > When Piggy dies, I noticed that he died without being truly introduced with his real (Birth) name. This can connect to our everyday world where in third world countries, people die daily without anyone knowing their name. > Also Piggy didn’t get to talk much because everyone just thought of him as a fatty that had no values for intellect. So they just dismissed his ideas that could have potentially saved the group many times. This connects to everyday life because many people in the world around us are judged by their “cover”. > The title of this book, “The Lord of the Flies” connects to religion as it is a near direct reference to the devil or to evilness. > The conch reminds me of a dinner bell because when the conch is blow (the dinner bell is rung) everyone gathers as a group. Lucas Cunha In group with Jade and Madison Chapter 12 Lord of the Flies Chapter 12 Summary Ralph is nervously hiding from the boys taking over the island. Ralph is mourning over the deaths of Piggy and Simon. Ralph sneakily goes to the Castle Rock and comes across Sam and Eric. Ralph talks with the twins for a bit, and unfortunately the twins don’t want to join Ralph. Jack sends a group of people to search for Ralph, and attempts to get Ralph to appear by fumigating the area and forcing him out. As hours pass by, an officer comes across Ralph and Ralph along with his hunters is saved from the island. Key Points: 1. 2. 3. 4. Simon and Piggy have been killed They send everyone after Ralph, who is hiding They meet with an officer They are found from the smoke that they made I can connect Lord of the Flies, to the novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. Hatchet is a book about a 13 year old boy, Brian, who crashes a plane on an island by himself with nothing but a hatchet. He survives on the island making his own shelter and food. Near the end of the book he gets saved by a rescue plane. This connects to Lord of the Flies because Brian is isolated on an island, just like Jack, Piggy, and others who are alone on the island as well. Also, Brian has to survive and gather shelter and food on his own, which is how Piggy and Jack have to live. Vocabulary Enricher/ Word Wizard Tendril: A twisting type of twining plant like a grapevine Inquisitive: To be curious and interested in something not always concerned with you Ululation: An awful howl or scream Triumphantly: To be victorious and be successful in something Antiphonal: A song recited or played alternately by two groups Connections – Matt D The T.V. series “LOST” is loosely based on “The Lord of the Flies” but I couldn’t remember a part in lost when they grabbed a person and started killing them by putting their teeth into their neck, so I decided that this reminded me of the first three episodes of season five of “The Walking Dead.” The Hunters which in this case are the equivalent of the Therminians, or Thermites, and when the Hunters went to get Simon thinking he was a beastie they killed him sunk their teeth in to him and that is pretty much, if not entirely, cannibalism. The Therminians, or Thermites, did the exact same thing to the main group, when they held them captive and then started to kill the other groups to use as meat. Then when the main group escaped the Thermites found them and stole one of their people. Later on you find out that they cut off his leg and started eating it in front of him and more useless points that I don’t need to mention. The main point is that the Thermites and the Hunters are the same in chapter nine except the Hunters kill thinking it’s a beastie or for fun, the Thermites kill for food and to live. -The television show 'lost' shares the premise of this book, 'Lord of the flies'. In both works a group of people are stranded on an island. -Piggy dies without his name being revealed just like how some people in the world will treat others as just a label instead of like the person they are. -In the book of 'Exodus', Moses is angered by the idol made while he was away and he destroys the idol in a fit of rage similarly to when Jack discovers the idol and destroys it. -There is a struggle for power on the island like the struggle in many political situations around the world. This situations have gotten violent before like how the conflict between escalates. Lord Of The Flies Questions 2. "How does Ralph learn of Jack's plan for him?" Ralph finds out about Jacks plan during the night when he goes to castle rock and sees Sam and Eric, because Sam and Eric tell him. 3. "Describe the detail of Ralphs flight across the island" Ralphs "flight" across the island is him fearfully running through the forest away from the hunters to get to the shore. 4. "Why is Percival unable to remember his name?" Percival is unable to remember his name because of how long they have been on the island, and because the smaller children are brushed aside and arent really adressed at all. 5. "Why does Ralph weep? How do the boys respond?" While Ralph is weeping, the others boys cry. In the authors words Ralph cries for the "for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy." 7. "Sam and Eric tell Ralph that Jack has sharpened a stick at both ends. What does Jack intend to do to Ralph?" Jack intends to cut off Ralphs head and put it on the top end of the stick then leave it in the ground, just as he did with the Lord Of The Flies effigy. 8. "What is the better show the Navel officer thought the British boys should have made? Do you think that the boys would have made a better show if Jack had not been there?" The show is just referring to how the boys acted. In short no, I don’t think they would have made a better show. I don’t think they would've made a better show because Roger would still be on the island. Now I do think they would've been civilized for a longer period of time but in the end I feel like Roger would've taken Jacks place only he would've been a more brutal version of Jack. Questioner/Discussion 1. Do you feel it was a fitting end? 2. What was the overall theme? 3. Did the ending fit the theme? 4. Close to the end of the chapter we see Ralph cry, do you think it was fitting to his character? 5. Do you think that this point they would've realistically been found? Given the circumstances do you think that realistically in todays society the average person would've brought the boys back to civilization or left them there? Chapter 12: questions 1. The irony of the fire is that it finally attracted help even though that's not what the fire was intended to do that time. It was also ironic that when Jack finally starts a fire it attracts rescue and maybe if Jack had watched the fire they would have been rescued sooner. 6. Ralph breaks the pig skull because he feels it's looking at him in a way that suggests it knows all the answers Ralph needs but won't tell him. Ralph is angered by this because he feels the pig skull idol thinks it knows more than him and in a fit Ralph attacks the pig skull idol.
