Bush uses many reasons such as: The terrorist threats; Their nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons; Ending the ‘truce that ended the Persian Gulf War’; And actual attacks that have taken place. These are all credible threats which if not dealt with correctly could cause a downfall of America. (Henretta, America: A Concise History) HOW THE ARTICLE IS PORTRAYED The author of this article is the President Bush; it is a summary of reasons why America should go to war with Iraq. It is directed to all of the citizens of the United States of America. This address is biased and is written one way, but for a good cause. The cause is to convince America to go to war with Iraq. Bush doesn’t express anything that would be controversial to what he is talking about, and the address only works towards getting Bush’s views across in the most straight forward, and convincing way possible. (Bush) CIS 1020 1 Word Final Project Austin Seager A REAL THREAT Bush is very logical in talking about the subject of going to war with Iraq. He brings up the fact that ‘Osama bin Laden the Al Qaeda leader’ have declared war on America in 1996. This means that there is a credible threat to us as a country. ‘Al Qaeda’ is a threat because it is a terrorist led group that Bush has reason to believe are making biological bombs. (Bush) TRUCE? Iraq was placed under a truce with America ‘that ended the Persian Gulf War’, and in that truce Iraq was to stop the production of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. This poses a problem to Bush because it voids the truce, and with all of the terrorist threats that America is receiving these weapons pose a significant threat to America. This information is backed up with evidence that” (Fernlund) CIS 1020 2 Word Final Project Austin Seager 1. The ‘Iraqi regime’ has ‘produced more than 30,000 liters of deadly chemicals’. This shows that they were planning an attack either on America, or some other people, possibly their own people even. 2. Iraq also has ‘ballistic missiles’ that can hit within ranges of ‘hundreds of miles’ which can hit many nations. 3. Iraq is also in the possession of airplanes that can be manned by just one terrorist to deploy chemical weapons wherever they decide to attack. 4. And they are also set to deploy suicide bombers with these biological weapons to pinpoint the exact location of an attack. (Bush) It’s noticeable why Bush would want to attack Iraq because they are building up weapons which could very well end life as we know it in America, sending radiation with their nukes and biological bombs wiping out entire cities. (Fernlund) Is the truce still in effect? 30,000 liters of Chemicals One manned airplanes Planning an attack CIS 1020 Ballistic Missiles Suicide bombers Not safe Wiping out cities Persian gulf Truce 3 Voided truce Word Final Project Austin Seager NUCLEAR WEAPONS Bush explains how important it is to not allow the Saddam Hussein to complete their nuclear bombs. He said that if they get enough uranium, ‘they could have a nuclear weapon in less than a year’. This is showing the importance of keeping uranium away from Saddam, because if he did get it, he could ‘blackmail anyone who aggression’. because Saddam This is important become a tyrant, and rule the world opposes is trying his to using force of deadly weapons. WHY ATTACK NOW? The people have brought up a good point in this article, asking why now? This threat has been around for ’11 years’ so why can’t we wait to do something about the problem? Bush clears this up by saying that the suicide bombings of September 11 have showed how serious the threat really is. What Bush means by this is that it’s not all just a game now. The terrorists have actually taken action by sending suicide bombers to bomb the Pentagon, and the World Trade Center. This bombing killed many ‘innocent people’. Attack Suicide Bombings Not a Game CIS 1020 Not to Attack Results of Attacks Why now? Pentagon Bombed Want to Wait 4 World Trade Center Bombed Word Final Project Austin Seager ULTIMATUM Bush gives an ultimatum to Iraq. Stating that they have to: allow the UN to supervise the destruction of ‘all existing weapons of mass destruction’; ‘end its support for terrorism’; and to stop ‘the persecution of its civilian population’. He mentions these things because if they were done, there would no longer be a credible threat which causes for a war. (Bush) CONCLUSION In this address given by President Bush, he explains why we should go to war with Iraq, his explanations were: ‘Osama bin Laden the Al Qaeda leader’ had declared war on America in 1996. Bush uses many reasons such as: the terrorist threats; their nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons; ending the ‘truce that ended the Persian Gulf War’; and actual attacks that have taken place. They are all very important reasons for why America should consider going to war with Iraq, according to President Bush.
