Cereal Box - Human Body Systems Project Name _______________________________________________________ Main Human Body System: ____________________________ Due Date: Thursday 12, 2015 Points earned/Test Grade _______ Other Related Human Body Systems (Back of box only): __________, __________, ____________, ____________ Over the next week, students will research different human body systems and create a cereal box project at home. Students will use resources such as library books, class notes, internet or science textbook to gather information for the project. Students will decorate a real cereal box (or similar type box) with illustrations and information related to the body systems using the directions below. (Variations of project may be done with teacher approval). Materials required to complete project include: 1 Empty cereal box (or similar type box), markers, white paper, brown bag, construction paper or decorative paper, tape or glue and the information and pictures about specific body systems. 1. Students will take the empty cereal box and cover it all around with paper so that the original markings on the cereal box cannot be identified. 2. Front of the Box (20pts) _____: Students will place the name of his/her body system on the front of the box similar to the brand name of the cereal (Ex. General Mills = Circulatory System), a catchy name for the cereal (Ex. Circo Bites), and a picture of the cereal. When creating the name for the cereal it should be related to the body system and sound like a cereal. Do not use a name that already exists. You may want to look at some real cereal boxes to get some ideas. Choose a shape for the cereal as well as colors and ingredients that all relate to the body system. For example, for the Immune System, you might invent a cereal called Leukos, a toasted oat cereal in the shape of white blood cells. Writing should be in large letters, and easily visible. The front of the box should also contain a labeled diagram showing all the organs of the system. The diagram can be hand drawn, computer generated or from a magazine. 3. Right Side (15pts) _____: Under the heading “ingredients”, make a list of organs/parts (minimum 3) which are your “ingredients” for your main body system. Also, write a sentence about each one that can include the function of the organ or any special facts or features of the organ structure that helps it do its job. For example, the stomach is coated with a thick layer of mucous to help protect it from the strong acid found inside it. 4. Left Side (25pts) _____: Write a summary that describes the main functions of the body system and how this system helps maintain homeostasis in the body. Try to use words that will “grab” readers’ attention and make them want to buy your cereal. 5. Bottom of the Box (5pts) _____: Include your name and the Works Cited for your references (minimum 3) 6. Top of the Box (10pts) _____: List and describe a person whose job is to specialize in this human body system (type of doctor), and 1 disease that might affect the body system you are researching along with any treatments. 7. Back of the Box (25pts) ______: Prize! Design a fun activity/prize that shows/describes how your body system functions with 4 other human body systems in order for you to live. (Ex. Treasure map, crossword puzzle, mini board game, puzzle, etc.) Project will be over one of the systems below: Nervous System Endocrine System Respiratory System Skeletal System Reproductive System Excretory System Muscular System Integumentary System
