cash crops = crop grown to be sold such as tobacco, cotton, rice, indigo (page

staple crops = a food that is eaten routinely, and in such quantities that it
constitutes a dominant portion of a standard diet in a given population
(example corn or wheat)
subsistence farming = when farmers produce only enough to feed and
maintain their families page page 151
joint stock company = form of business organization; pooled funds of many
investors or stockholders who can independently sell their shares of the
company (example: The Virgina Company). Page 123
burgesses = elected representatives to a lawmaking body in the English
colonies (example: The Virginia House of Burgesses). Page 126
Puritans = member of the Anglican Church who wanted to “purify” the
church; also known as Pilgrims (example: The colonists who settled the
Mass. Bay Colony). Page 128
Quakers = Protestant reformer who believed in religious tolerance; also know
as the Society of Friends. (example: Philadelphia was founded by William
Penn who was a Quaker.) page 139
Triangular Trade Route = regular trading route that formed a triangle
between the West Indies, colonial America, England and Africa. Important:
Your picture should show the main products being transported on each

Middle Passage = the forced trip between Africa and America made by
enslaved Africans page 165
Mayflower Compact = an agreement made by Puritan/ Pilgrim leaders that
