Paragraph 2 :

In this poem, Blake describes, in great detail, the hatred between two friends. The narrator was angry with his friend who soon became his foe. The hatred and anger between them was represented by a growing tree. The theme of "The Poison Tree" is anger and hatred won't solve anything. To solve your problems, you have to reach out to them, and set aside your differences. William Blake uses symbolism in most of his poem. The devastation between the relationship of the two friends was represented as the poison tree that kept growing throughout the poem. The poison refers to the hatred, and the tree was the growing factor in the relationship.

So the "poison tree" was the growing of hatred in the poem. Blake also uses the auditory device of rhyme in his poem. The rhyme scheme was "A A B B". This poem has a lot of meanings to it that we can use in our lives. Life is to short to spend it bickering with others around you. Problems need to be solved, and some of us need to compromise sometimes. In this poem he showed how the anger between the two soon killed one of them because of the hatred which was the poisonous apple that one of the characters figuratively ate.

Paragraph 3 :

In the song, “The Heart Wants what it wants,” Selena sings “herion drip no more so.” This line would be a metaphor. She is comparing his love to a drug, which means it is addictive. Now that she is addicted to his love, its hard to let go of some one that you love, even if they don’t deserve you. So “herion drip no more so” relates to the theme because she can not stop loving him or let him go because of her addiction to his love.

Paragraph 4:

In the poem

Auto Wreck

by Karl Shapiro the theme of death is developed through similes and metaphors to emphasize the fantasy-like and wild setting of the auto wreck. The most important literary device used is the simile comparing the light as “Pulsing out” “like an artery,” contrasting the red light emitted from an ambulance to the blood of an artery. The idea that a light is spurted out like blood is abstract and bizarre just as death is an abstract idea. In addition to that simile, Shapiro uses a metaphor to describe the wreckage as

“Empty husks of locust ”

- like in the devastation they cause. This depiction of the auto wreck is extravagant and almost unreal. Using figurative language, Shapiro reinforces the theme of death as being bizarre and perplexing.
