Summer Packet for
Rising 1st Graders
Dear Rising 1st Graders,
Congratulations for completing Kindergarten! While
you have fun this summer, please remember to keep your
brain active! Your summer packet consists of 3 parts:
Reading, Math, and Writing. It will be due the 1st day of
school, August 26.
On the following pages you will find a reading log with
some response questions, a math log, and a few pages for
journaling your summer days. Please read the directions on
each activity in order to complete it correctly. Feel free to
go beyond the minimum expectation! These activities are
meant to keep your brain “turned on” during the summer,
so that you will be ready for 1st grade in the fall!
Enjoy your summer and we’ll see you in August!

Reading Log: There are 10 full weeks of summer vacation this year. We ask that
you read 5 books during that time. A good way to break it up, is one book every
other week! After your book is completed, choose a reading response question
and complete a section of the reading log. You may only use each question
once! Remember to write in complete sentences!
1. What character do you like the best? Why?
2. What character do you like least? Why?
3. The part of the book/chapter that surprised me most was…
4. Is there a problem in the story? What was it? How was it solved?
5. The setting of the story was….. (time and place). Would you like to travel there?
6. Describe the main character with three adjectives. Does he/she remind you of anyone you
know?
7. If you could give any of the characters advice, what would it be? What do you think they
would say in return?
8. If you could change any part of the story, what would it be? Why?
9. Is the story you read believable? Why or why not?
10. Pretend to interview a character in the story. Who are you interviewing? What will you ask
him/her and what do you think they will answer?
11. If the story could have a sequel, what would happen in it?
12. What are three interesting facts that you learned from your story?

Math Log: Please practice addition and subtraction math facts each week.
You can do a “math minute” twice a week on sadlier-oxford.com, use flashcards
with a parent, or have someone write ten equations down for you. Make sure if
you do not use the website to time yourself. (Microwaves are a good timer if
you don’t have a phone or watch handy!) Record the number of equations you
answered correctly down on the math log each time you practice. If 10
equations is too easy after a while, try 20!
*sadlier-oxford.com is the publisher for our math series. Go to the website,
click on mathematics and choose your grade level. Click on “For students”,
“Math Minute” and set up your test with either addition or subtraction
equations, 1 minute, 10 problems.

Writing: Choose your favorite part of the entire summer! Where did you go on
vacation? Did you go to camp? Did you spend some time with a special relative?
Write a few sentences (1-3) telling me what you did and why you liked it. When
you’re finished, draw a picture!
