PUBLIC LECTURE: Olabiyi, T.I. (2012). Filling the fertility gap through Organic Agricultural Practices. A public lecture delivered at Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture at Nike Lake Resort Hotel, Enugu on 27 September 2012. I. PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT: Development of environmentally friendly measures, most especially in the area of the application of plant extracts and organic wastes in the control of nematode pests of economically important crops. I have found some plant extracts and organic waste materials that are as effective as synthetic nematicide, and could be used as alternative control measure. I found that plant extracts and organic waste materials are more bio-degradable, available at the time of use and environment friendly when compared to synthetic nematicides. I conducted Pharmacognostic studies on some plant extracts and organic waste materials, and found out that plant extracts and organic waste materials contain certain substances (flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, saponins and sterols) which are not lethal to human beings, fish and livestock, and do not cause environmental pollution, but could be effectively exploited in the control of nematode pests of economic food crops. Development and formulation of organic pesticides (bio-nematicides) which have been effectively used in the control of nematode diseases of agricultural crops to supplement/replace the existing synthetic pesticides. I have conducted many researches leading to the production of “safe to eat food crops”. At the moment, I have developed biological control measures with Trichoderma species for the control of pathogenic organisms on agricultural crops. I have developed different types of compost, which had been effectively used as soilinhabiting nematode control as well as to augment soil nutrient I was involved in the establishment of the organic programme of LAUTECH Agricultural Services Limited, which was pursed up to the level of certification. This 14 certification brought LAUTECH to the global limelight as the first University in Africa to receive organic agriculture certification for its field crops (Cashew, Ginger, Turmeric and Lemon grass) J.
