EDAD 613 Dr. Rich Adequacy Now Report Narrative The student that I focused on is a 7th grade female Chinese student. She is the only child that lives with her mother in an apartment close to school. Her father is working and living in China. Her mother has no previous education level and father has some high school education level. She is from a socioeconomically disadvantaged household. She is an English Learner with a beginner’s fluency. She is very low in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Even going over basic skills, she still struggles with memorization. She is very shy and has no social skills. She has no friends and likes to eat lunch alone or with the ELD teacher. She has only been living in the United States for one year and is already creating amazing art work. She enjoys creating her own manga comic books. I am certain her social skills are affected by her lack of English proficiency (language barrier), and I do believe she also has a learning disability. Her current schedule is shown below: Time/Period Class/Activity Staff Funding Source Cost/Year Social/Emotional/Academic Effect + or - 1-8:05-8:55 Phys Ed. First, she is new to the country and her English is very limited. Learning English, at the same time learning science, math, history, and fitting into the dominant culture is too overwhelming and going to be a struggle. She may need to rearrange her schedule where she can incorporate an art class that will give her something that she enjoys doing. Learning all different content areas for a beginning EL is like learning all new languages for each class. She needs to be tested for IEP and also tested in her first language. With testing, it would allow for her teachers to understand her better and meet her needs. She has a hard time memorizing simple ideas and tasks. She is not motivated to do homework- which may be due to the language barrier and/or learning disability. Getting her to join in groups and socialize with others can be a struggle. She is hesitant to want to join group conversations. Her mother is very supportive in her education, yet mom has no prior education level. This student loves to draw and yet her schedule is filled with all the academics when she may need a class to relax her brain and enrich her skills in art. The new and improved purpose schedule: Time/Period Class/Activity Staff Funding Source Cost/Year Social/Emotional/Academic Effect + or - 1-8:05-8:55 Phys Ed. The student’s day will begin with her going to her Physical Education class with a certificated teacher. Then, for her first semester, she would head to her second period class which is Science with a certificated teacher. Her second semester, she will have History with a certificated teacher. Her third period class would be her elective which is Art with a certificated teacher. She will be able to utilize her skills and her interest into her art work. She will then head to her fourth period class which is Pre-Algebra with a certificated teacher. After math, is Gator-aide. Every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, she will work with the ELD aide who will help her with her work from any of her classes. Every Tuesdays and Thursdays, she will be pulled from a club called Peer Mediators, where they can work with her on her social skills. These Peer mediators not only solve conflicts between people, but they also help build relationships and team building which this student needs for her social skills. Lunch will occur and she will eat lunch and enjoy going to an Art club so she can improve and become an artist. She will head to her ELD class where she will practice her English skills through listening, speaking, writing, and reading. There’s also an ELD aide who supports and works with her language skills. She will eventually head to her last class which is her RSP English class and rebuild what she learned from ELD into her writing pieces. She would also have an RSP instructional aide during that period to also help her with language acquisition. She will be able to utilize a one-on-one with the ELD aide and instructional aide during her two last hours of school by practicing her English. After school, there would be an enrichment program, where the first hour is tutoring and homework session. She may get help from any tutors/teachers available in the after-school program. The next two hours would be enrichment where she can participate in different activities each day, or continue with her passion of art. What I feel would also benefit her is scheduling a SST (School Site Team) with her mother and teachers to communicate and collaborate about a plan for her, that way teachers are aware and educated on how to reach English Learners as well as students with disabilities. Teachers would also be educated on the grading system of giving her a “P” for passing if she is trying hard. Obviously, being new to the country, she will probably get an F in everything if there is no way of assessing her differently from others because of her needs. The school psychologist would need to test her for a learning disability and set up her IEP class schedule for the following year. She would improve with hiring a bilingual Chinese/English tutor in town, primarily from Chico State. To continue to foster her social skills, I would have her participate and embrace her Chinese culture by dressing up and sharing about her heritage during Multicultural week at school. I would also introduce her to the Asian Community in Chico through Asian Bible Church, and Asian Christian Fellowship, where there’s lots of time for socializing and building relationships with people. To embrace her art skills, changing her schedule by giving her an art class would give her selfconfidence that she is good at something. I would also take her on field trips to art museums, and Butte College or CSU Chico’s Art Program and get her thinking about her future career passion in art. I would also enter her artwork in contests or the Silver Dollar Fair and motivate her that she is good and successful at what gifts and talents she has in drawing. I would also provide her with private art lessons, and have her get involved in the school by decorating our school posters and school bulletins. With her family lifestyle, I would ask that our school continue to educate bilingual parents by providing parent education nights once every week. Our target-case manager would be in charge of running that program. I would also purchase her a Skype camera so she can still communicate and chat with her family in China. Having a relationship with family is important because that would also help boost her self-esteem with talking to others.
