Persuasive Speech CATA101 Speech Three Requirements • • • • Time? Organization? Visual Aid? Number of Sources? Where to Start? Pick a side you will defend…… You have three Choices…. • Attack the status quo and show there is a need to change what we now have. • Defend the status quo and show what we are doing is right. • Tweak the status quo and show with some minor revisions it will work. I. Arguments/Evidence Why is there a need to change what we have or keep it or fix it? ►Come up with a list of need arguments ►See if you have evidence ►Find additional evidence Example… I. Consider what children are watching in movies and it is obvious there is a need to change the rating system. A. The MPAA ratings have become more lenient because Americans have become more accepting of violence, sex, and foul language (MPAA1). B. Examples of this abound. 1. In the G-rated family movie,”Beauty and the Beast,” one little girl in the audience began a life long fear of dogs because of the scene where the snarling wolves chase Belle (Morris, “Silver” 2) 2. From my own experience I noticed small children were visibly upset when watching the movie “King Kong” with their parents, even though the movie was rated PG-13 for Frightening Adventure, Violence and Disturbing Images. C. Language is another issue 1. Any movie containing the F-word used in a NON sexual way receives a PG13 rating, and if the F-word is repeated in a sexual way, the movie receives an R rating (Means, 1) 2. In both “Notting Hill” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” the F-word was used to refer to sex and it still got by with a PG-13 rating (Means, 1). 3. While the Salt Lake Tribune on March 28, 2004, stated that profanity seems to be a big issue that is address by the MPAA ratings board, 4. The September 19, 1999, issue of U.S. News and World Reports stated: “There are many G and PG-13 movies that contain words such as ‘damn’ and ‘hell.’” 5. Consequently, we can see that ratings have become more lenient and children are watching and hearing more profanity than ever before. When you look at your outline for speech 3, most of your evidence should come in the Body in the area of “need.” •What are your strongest need arguments? •Put them as Roman Numeral One in the Body Of your outline. •Make sure you see lots of evidence. II. Plan • If you are going to defend the status quo, come up with ideas about how and why it solves the current problems. • If you are going to attack the status quo, come up with a plan that will solve the problems not currently being solved. • If you are going tweak the status quo, come up with a plan that does that. II. The MPAA Guidelines should and can be changed. A. First, add a new guideline for children under 7. 1. The September 29, 1999, issue of U.S. News and World Report, suggests a G-6 rating could be in introduced for movies too intense for children 6 or younger to see. 2. The MPAA could also make it a guideline for parents who have children under the age of 7 to pre-screen movies before their children see them. 3. Definitely there should be a publicity blitz about each of these. B.The current guidelines need to be tightened. 1. The movie ratings G, PG, PG-13, R and X are just age guidelines. 2. The MPAA needs to be more specific about how much sex, drugs, violence and foul language is in a movie. C. It should be a law that a photo ID must be shown before viewing a movie. Your Turn: Come up with a plan that will solve your need issues OR Describe that the current system is working just fine and we should keep it OR Come up with tweaking that will make the current system work better. This will be the middle part of your speech body. The third part of the body of your speech will be an attempt to connect your need and plan. Ask yourself: How does my plan solve the need I discussed in the first part of my Speech? III. Connect, connect, connect Need + Plan = Solution (a better world) Introduction • • • • • Attention Motivation Thesis Overview Transition Conclusion • Underview • Call for Action • Last Thought Class on Tuesday: • Finish chapter 15. • Study the Toulmin Model • Quiz over both the above & discuss • We’ll be taking your questionnaires. • We will be signing up for speech tutors.
