Grade Language Arts Syllabus –

Mrs. Vining

In an attempt to make the CJHS website easier for parents to use, we have made a change this year. When you go to www.colsd.org

and click on the CJHS tab, you will now see a 7 th grade planner listed on the lefthand side. When you click on that, it will take you to a page where all the core teachers for 7 th grade are listed. This should make finding your child’s homework much quicker and keep you from having to go back to the faculty page for each individual teacher. We hope this makes it easier for you as a family to keep up on what teachers are doing in their classrooms.

Pillar Presentations – Group presentations for Character Counts Pillars

Reading Goal – 3 Books – books must be 100 pgs. minimum. If the book has more than 400 pages, it can count as 2 books. Students must take the AR test on the book in order for it to count (if the book has one). If the book does not have an AR book, the student must see me, in order to get the necessary assignment for the book to count. Students may not count books that have already been read in the past.

 Pre-test – Students will be assessed on a reading pre-test and will then be assessed at the end of the year on a similar assessment to show growth. This assessment will be listed in the grade book, but will only count for 0.1 of a grade. I just want you, as a parent/guardian to know where your child is at.

STAR Reading Assessment – Students will be assessed on the STAR assessment which will provide them with a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) which is a range of books each individual student should read within. This assessment will be listed in the grade book.

DORA Assessment – Students were assessed at the end of 6 th grade on the DORA assessment, this assessment will be listed in this year’s grade book also. Students will retake this assessment in January.

 Touching Spirit Bear – Students will read the book in class, using the close reading strategies of Notice and Note Signposts to really understand the story. Students will take the test on this book and it can count towards one of their books for quarter one if the test is passed.

Vocab – We will focus on vocabulary from Touching Spirit Bear and students will be assessed on those words at the end of the quarter.

 Vocab – We will also be using the words from the 7 th grade Vocabularly for Achievement. Students will be using the words to learn their meanings and parts of speech, and will be learning to write various types of sentences.

 Someone I Respect Essay – We will go over the major parts of a 5 paragraph essay (introduction, body -

3 main idea paragraphs, and conclusion) and how to successfully write each part, include elaboration, and edit and revise. Students must revise work until there are 4 or fewer errors before receiving a

grade on this assignment. I will provide feedback on each revision submitted. The final grade for this assignment will be based on the last revision.
