AND YOU LOVE THEM ALL! College Mythbuster I have received tons of information in the mail from this college, so that must mean I will be admitted if I apply. 16 While many schools distribute a plethora of informational posters, calendars, view books, these should be recognized for what they are: marketing tactics. 17 • You may be sent information for a university for which you are not well qualified just so that you will apply so the school can reject you. • This practice can increase a school's rankings by decreasing the percentage of students it accepts. • Although it may be accepting the same number of students from year to year, if more apply than in previous years, a college appears more selective via percentages accepted. 18 What Does Matter To Colleges? • Demonstrated Interest is a category many colleges use to evaluate students who are already in the academic range to be a successful applicant. • The more highly selective schools have so many applicants that Demonstrated Interest is not a category on their radar in the admissions review. 19 Who Will More Likely Attend? Most Significant: Present compelling reasons in the college essay why this college is a fit for you. Attend meeting at SFHS or local area site where college is presenting information. Visit college booth at College Fair or Case Studies. Communicate with the Admissions officer you meet. (Appropriate, but not annoying.) Make a campus visit/tour and register with Admissions Office. 20 Who Is Coming to Campus? Updated Daily Demonstrated Interest!! 21 College Mythbuster Significant out-of-class activities will compensate for grades if I am a marginal academic match for admissions to a college. 22 Remember Admissions Criteria Based on college admissions trends, these are the factors in order of importance when colleges make an admissions decision. Factor % of colleges that give factor “Considerable Importance” Grades 82% Rigor 65% Test scores 56% Personal essay 20% Demonstrated interest Note 18% Counselor recommendation 16% Teacher recommendation 15% Extracurricular activities 7% 23 Colleges look at your academic performance first. Lots of extracurricular activities help… •Only if the college has proof (GPA, Test Scores) that you can do the academic work. •Admissions Office must approve athletic recruits, talent recruits, etc. Your high school grades are the #1 factor in the college admission decision. 24 College Mythbuster Colleges are more impressed with a pricey summer program than a community college course. 25 Summer Programs and Enrichment Activities…. Summer activities convey initiative and depth in pursuing a passion, stimulating an interest, or taking a risk to learn something new. It is not the specific activity, but what it meant to you and how it fits with your pursuit of something you care about. (Translated to colleges in Resume and Essay Sections of applications.) Local service projects can be as impressive as a service trip to a foreign country. (You do not have to travel to Russia and serve soup in a gulag.) 26 Benefits of Community College Course • A community college course will be listed on your Saint Francis High School transcript as an enrichment grade, but both the Californian State University and the University of California will add the grade of a UC A-G transferable course to your academic review when you apply. • A 3 semester unit or 4 quarter unit community college course or college course will count as a full year of high school with extra grade point added to the grade you earn in the course. (Equal to AP) • Private colleges will see you can successfully complete college level work when reviewing your application. 27 For More On Summer Opportunities… Check these links in your Family Connection: Junior Class Portal 28 College Mythbuster My life will be ruined if I don't get admitted to my first choice college. 29 Name College Attended Steve Jobs Reed College-Oregon Liberal Arts Bill Gates Harvard-never graduated Warren Buffett Transferred from U Penn Wharton to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. After two years (His parents did not want him to go there.) at Penn, he determined that the instructors knew less about finance than he did. He returned to Omaha and finished undergraduate work at the University of Nebraska. Buffett then applied to Harvard graduate school but was denied admission. Barrack Obama Occidental and then transferred to Columbia Stephen Spielberg Long Beach State (Dropped out of USC due to low grades) In 2002, thirty-five years after starting college, Spielberg finished his degree via independent projects at CSULB, and was awarded a B.A. in Film Production and Electronic Arts with an option in Film/Video Production. 30 College Mythbuster I am much more likely to graduate in 4 years at a public school. 31 AICCU=Independent (Private) California Colleges and Universities Private Private 32 33 The More Research Time Invested in Finding a Good Fit, the More Likely You Will Graduate On Time. 34 Consider Educational Model in California for a Fit… CSU-Top 33% UC-Top 9% Private-GPA Ranges Vary • Practical application and career preparation. • Theoretical focus, emphasis on research. • Varied Educational Models • Class size ranges from 30-100. • Self-motivated style of learning with huge class sizes for GE requirements. • More opportunities to pursue individual preference for research. • Professor teaches courses. • Class size may be 400 broken into sections for discussions and labs. • Professor may oversee graduate students giving instruction. • Liberal Arts, Specialty • Small class size with emphasis on connecting with professors. 35 College Mythbuster Private colleges are much more expensive than public universities. 36 37 Consider cost: 4 years at a private vs. 5-6 years at a public. 38 College Mythbuster Liberal arts colleges do not have good science programs. 39 40 41 42 College Mythbuster College admissions officers will not have time to review my social networking. 43 Of 381 college admissions officers who answered a Kaplan telephone questionnaire… • 31 percent said they had visited an applicant’s Facebook or other personal social media page to learn more about them — a five-percentage-point increase from the year before. More crucially for those trying to get into college, • 30 percent of the admissions officers said they had discovered information online that had negatively affected an applicant’s prospects. 44 Admissions officers, athletic recruiters, and scholarship coordinators may view your social media. •Search your own name on Google.
