• The first set of roots are prefixes, meaning they
are found at the beginning of words.

• Example: atypical = not typical; irregular
anhydrous = with all water removed

Anti-, ant• Definition: against
• Example: antidote = a medicine for
counteracting the effects of poison

Co-, com-, con• Definition: with, together
• Example: cogent = convincing
congress = the act of coming together

• Challenge Word: convergence (noun) the
act of moving together from different directions
to form union or uniformity
De• Definition: away, apart (indicates reversal)
• Example: decry = to condemn

• The next set of roots are suffixes, which means
they are found at the end of words.

• Definition: capable, worthy of (forms adjectives)
• Example: admirable = worthy of admiration, inspiring

audible = capable of being heard

• Definition: turns verbs into nouns

• Definition: to cause to become (forms verbs)
• Example: petrify = to convert into stone, OR to
