For access apply through the secretary in the appropriate office. Grades will be updated by 8:00 a.m. each Monday. 3 Test Policy: Tests may be written, objective, subjective, performance, or given via the internet or an online testing program. Assigned chapter work and labs that are part of the course are due before taking the chapter or final test. All tests are closed book. The tests are to be completed within one class period. Breaks may not be taken during testing. Questions about the exam may be referred to the instructor. Questions will only be answered to clarify the meaning of a question. Conversations with people other than the instructor are prohibited and will result in a test grade of zero (0) for all people involved. Since we will move through the classroom material together, all students are expected to take the given test on the date indicated by the instructor. If you are present on the day of the test announcement, it will be the responsibility of the student to be prepared for the test on test day even if test day is your first day to return to class since your absence. Chapter Tests (40%) and Final Tests (10% of total grade) If a chapter test score of less than 70% is achieved, the test may be retaken in an attempt to make 70% or better. You will be allowed no more than two (2) retakes per chapter test. The grade earned on each attempt will be averaged for your final grade. However, if you make better than 70% on your chapter test, you may also attempt two (2) retakes to better your score. In this case, your highest score will be your final grade. Class time is used to retake the test on the following class day. Additional retakes will need to be taken after school. Final tests may be retaken once. There are a total of 16 Chapter Cisco Online Tests and two (2) Final Cisco Online Final Tests-one final at the conclusion of Chapter 10 and one final at the end of Chapter 16. Hands-On (Skill) Performance Final Test Completion of this course will require passing one (1) hands-on (skill) performance test (assemble a computer) with 100%. This test may be retaken and the grade averaged in the same manner as outlined in the Chapter Tests section above. Should the student not achieve a grade of “100%” on the performance test or does not take the required test, a grade of Fail (F) will be assigned in the Cisco Networking Academy and in the teacher gradebook. A minimum grade of 70% is required on the online final tests and a grade of 100% (PASS) on the hands-on, performance (skills) test to proceed to IT Essentials II: Network Operating Systems. Failure to meet the 70% minimum grade requirement will require the student to retake the class before proceeding to IT Essentials II: Network Operating Systems. Daily Grades (30%) The daily grade will count as 30% of your total grade for this class. You will be expected to complete a certain amount of work each week. Due dates will be given to you so it is important to learn to manage your time effectively. 4 Before you submit any work, please review it for accuracy! If a printed assignment, you must also have the appropriate header/footer information on it. All assignments should be saved in your classroom folder with the appropriate assignment name followed by your initials. You may be asked to turn in assignments digitally. If so, instructions will be given as necessary. To turn in printed or written assignments, you MUST also have a completed class label attached in the upper left-hand corner. NO LABEL--NO GRADE. Place the work in the correct wire bin at the work table. YOU will be responsible for picking up your graded assignments and filing them in your class folder. These assignments will be used again for your portfolio--you must keep ALL assignments. DO NOT THROW AWAY OR DELETE ANY GRADED ASSIGNMENT. Your label will indicate if your assignment has been accepted or denied and your grade will be under the label on your paper. I will be monitoring for mastering of the concept and techniques used to produce the necessary work. If denied, you must make the necessary corrections and resubmit the assignment. I will discuss your assignment with you and indicate further instructions as needed. The assignment which has been corrected should be stapled on top of the original assignment with another label (do not throw away the original work or the original label). The two grades received on the assignment will be averaged for your final grade. No grade for this assignment is recorded until you resubmit it. If the assignment is denied a second time, the lowest grade acquired on that assignment will be recorded. For this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general. General advice and interaction are encouraged. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. Such collaboration (not to be confused with “copying”) constitutes the skill of teamwork. Remember that you alone are ultimately responsible for your grade. Labs – Worksheets (daily grade) Labs, Worksheets, and any other assigned work must be completed before taking the Chapter or final test each covers. They are due when you come to class (enter the door) on test day. You may complete them the day of the test (after taking the test) for 50% credit. These are DUE on test day and will NOT be accepted at any other time. Time Management/Work Ethic/Reflection (20%) You will be evaluated each class period on your work ethic and time management. Each day will be worth 20 points making a total of 100 points every week. Any day you are absent unexcused, you will be unable to receive any points. Remember, it is your responsibility to follow up on your absences and see that they are excused through the attendance office. Number of points (20) awarded each day* will be based on: Arrives to class on time (5 points) Leave work area clean & orderly (5 points) Took no hall passes (5 points) On Task (5 points) 5 *Exceptions (the following supersedes the breakdown of the 20 daily points that can be awarded): If work journal and reflection is not completed, NO (zero) points will be awarded for the day. If you are working on another class’s work without permission, did little to no work during class, or are found surfing/playing games/using computer for things other than classrelated items, NO (zero) points will be awarded. NO reflection will result in a ten (10) point daily deduction. Double deduction (ten points) for YOU not recording such things as taking a hall pass or being tardy. Otherwise, only the standard five (5) point deduction will apply. If absent, points awarded only for School Activity, College Visit, or Office Excused. DAILY you must record the work you complete during class on your TM/Work Ethic/Reflection sheet in the space provided to receive any points—just like filling out a time card in the workplace! Sheets are due each Friday and will not be accepted late. Your instructor is the final evaluator. You must demonstrate to the instructor a strong time management/work ethic--on task, good attitude, working cooperatively with others, respectful, and giving your boss (your instructor) an honest day's work for an honest day's pay. Homework and Late Work All homework assignments are due at the beginning of the next class period. Late work (other than labs & worksheets—see above section) will be deducted at 50% of the maximum value unless absence is excused by the attendance clerk. Students are expected to turn in their work on time. If you know you are going to be gone, you will need to get your work before your absence. Work or tests missed due to unexcused absences will not be allowed to be made up and a grade of zero (0) will be recorded. Projects will be due on the due date without exception (late work policy does not apply to long-term projects). Students are responsible for acquiring work missed due to an absence. Please read your student handbook concerning the time allowed to make up work. No late work will be accepted more than five days late or during dead week in either semester. Bonus Points: Twenty-five (25) bonus points will be awarded toward your daily points for participation in “Dress for Success” days. These days will be the meeting dates of all BPA meetings. Young men will wear collared shirt and/or sweater and slacks or dress khakis, dark socks, and casual dress shoes. Young ladies will wear coordinated pantsuit, dress skirts, dress slacks, or dress khakis with coordinated shirt or sweater, and casual dress shoes (no “between the toe” shoes allowed). Remember, judgment of appropriate dress belongs to the teacher. To ensure bonus points are received, follow the guidelines exactly. NO OTHER EXTRA CREDIT WORK IS GIVEN! 6 Academic Honor Code In order to sustain a community of trust in which the students and teacher can work together to develop their educational potential and goals, ethical standards of honesty are expected so that all students may compete fairly in the classroom to earn their academic standing through their own efforts. Violations of the honor code include lying, cheating, copying/sharing work, or stealing (as defined in the Student Handbook 12-13). Student(s) in violation of the Academic Honor Code will receive no credit (a zero) for the assignment. A violation will also lose semester test exemption status in all classes and NHS status may be denied or revoked. Attendance extra points Student attendance in class is an integral part of the learning process. Being a part of regular instruction and participating in class discussions are invaluable ingredients of education. Since finals from Cisco IT Essentials cannot be exempted based on attendance, bonus points will be awarded for those meeting the same attendance requirements as set forth in the Student Handbook for test exemption. Bonus points will be added to your “Test” average at the end of each semester if the following requirements are met: No unexcused absences--including three (3) or more tardies AND one of the following: - An “A” in coursework and no more than three (3) excused absences - A “B” in coursework and no more than two (2) excused absences - A “C” in coursework and no more than zero (0) excused absence It should be noted that school related absences will not be counted against a student’s potential exemption from final tests. Percentage Points to be awarded to test average and used to determine final grade: Grade A B C D F Points 3 2 1 0 0 Attendance Policy Attendance and punctuality are the two biggest complaints that employers have with their employees. Part of your technology training stresses the importance of regular attendance. You will be expected to come to class ready to work every day. You must be in the room when the tardy bell finishes ringing. If you are tardy, you must sign in and five (5) points will be deducted from your time management/work ethic grade (explained above). Also, tardies will be assigned the consequences as listed in the DCHS Student Handbook 12-13. As well, be aware that three (3) tardies will be equal to one (1) unexcused absence in individual classes each semester and also results in a loss of test exemption. The District will comply with Oklahoma State Laws and the State Department of Education Accreditation Standards pertaining to the compulsory School Attendance: 7 High school students, grades 9-12, must attend classes at least 89% (no more than 10 (ten) absences—excused and unexcused absences – per semester) to receive a passing grade in any course in which they are enrolled. Therefore, even if a student is passing a class, he/she will receive an incomplete for that class if his/her attendance falls below 89% during the semester. Parent/guardian must verify absences by personally notifying the school the day of the absence. Students will not be counted absent for approved school activities. Internet & Social Networking Policies Students may be asked to use the internet or social media including facebook, weblogs (blogs), podcasts, wikis, or other applications for online communication and collaboration as part of their learning activities. Students should be mindful that publishing your work or ideas on the Internet is a very public activity. You should think carefully about anything you publish. Even if you delete something after you have published it, it can be found on the web for years afterwards. You shouldn’t publish anything you wouldn’t be comfortable with anyone viewing e.g. from parents to future employers. Again, using the computer for anything other than class work will result in a zero for your time management/work ethic grade on any given day. It is important that each student is aware of their rights and responsibilities as outlined in the Internet Acceptable Use Policy signed. Any inappropriate use could lead to the loss of internet privileges. Bring-Your-Own-Device Policy (cell phones, iPods, iPads, laptops, tablets, etc.) The following policy will be implemented in my classroom. No devices allowed out, in sight, or in use, from the moment the tardy bell rings through the dismissal bell. Consequences will be: 1st time: Warning 2nd time: Give device to instructor until end of hour 3rd time: Device will be surrendered to instructor to be turned in to the appropriate office for parents to pick up after school (referral written). Additional times: Same as above. After two additional times, school policy states that the device will not be allowed to be brought to school. All devices will be left in the classroom when a hall pass is taken. There will be times when I do allow devices. However, that will be the exception, not the rule. Therefore, my policy can be summed up as “No, until yes.” Class Procedures Be prepared! Upon entering the classroom, get any materials (textbooks, lab manuals, handouts) needed for the area in which you are currently working. Also, pick up any graded 8 work that has been returned. Since roll will be taken from a seating chart, please proceed to your assigned seat and begin working as quickly as possible. Throughout the year seating may be changed based on placement in groups using a variety of group selection processes. The instructor reserves the right to change seating assignments and/or group assignments at her discretion due to behavioral or related issues. Hall passes will be given out on an emergency basis only at a cost of five (5) points per request to be deducted from your 20 point time management/work ethic daily grade. Breaks between classes should be used for getting drinks or going to the restroom. Should you have an emergency need to leave the room, you must first get permission and a pass from me and then sign out indicating the date, time, and your destination. Upon returning, you must sign in with your return time. On your daily Time Management sheet, you will indicate that you took a hall pass. Should you not do so, ten (10) points will be deducted rather than five (5). Further, you will be expected to leave your work area clean and orderly. There will be a five (5) point deduction from your time management/work ethic grade for such items as: trash left at your workstation, textbook/supplies/equipment not put away, chair not pushed in, pen/pencil marks found on any equipment or tables, and failure to log out of the network. This classroom contains equipment that is very costly. The student will be responsible for cost or replacement of any equipment that is intentionally damaged, destroyed, or missing from their assigned workstation. Report any problems with equipment to your instructor. Seeking Curriculum Assistance In the business world, you must learn to seek out answers using a variety of resources. Therefore, when you experience difficulty with a procedure, please follow these steps: Thoroughly RE-READ AND/OR RE-TRY the directions/procedure. Try to find the answer yourself by utilizing related resources & notes. Ask another student/trainee who has been through the same material. See your instructor for assistance. Following these procedures will develop the demanding skills of critical-thinking and problem-solving highly sought by every employer! Substitute Procedure for the Classroom In the event your instructor is absent, a substitute will be present and there will be an assignment! Students will treat the sub with total respect! All classroom rules and procedures will be strictly enforced. Students will check Blackboard for the day’s assignment and will work the entire class period. A grade will be taken for work completed that day. No hall passes! During the Last Five Minutes of Class: 1. Log off the network. 2. Complete your time management/work ethic sheet. 3. Clean up your workstation-- return any books, folders, and supplies to their proper location and pick up trash. Leave the area neat and clean for the next person. 4. Remain at your workstation until the bell rings. Push chairs under desks as you leave. 9 Other Information My classroom expectations: 1. No food, candy, gum, or drinks (exception: water with lid). 2.
