Flowers for Algernon - Ethical Medical Speeches

Ethical Experiment Speeches
In Flowers for Algernon, Charlie undergoes a questionable operation to possibly increase his
intelligence. With little knowledge, understanding, or care, Charlie is given up for human testing which could
destroy him. While experiments like this are rare today, recent history has shown that humans will perform
horrible actions on each other in the name of science.
Individually, you will select one of the following topics and create a 3 minute speech to present in front
of the class. Your speech needs to include four specific elements. First, the original experiment should be
outlined in detail; then, the unethical elements of the case should be discussed. Next, the controversy
surrounding the experiment must be linked to the events of the novel. Finally, you must include your
perspective on the experiment that Charlie was involved in (i.e.: should it have been done? Was it right?)
