Virtual Learning Options for SCS Parent and Student Agreement 2013-2014 Virtual learning courses give students options for alternative scheduling. A student may apply for a virtual credit option that can be taken on or off campus if he or she has achieved a level of academic and social maturity necessary to perform successfully in alternative credit courses, received approval from the principal, and agrees to the guidelines listed below. The following guidelines are expected in order for a student to participate in online courses provided by the Surry Virtual Academy (SVA), NC Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS) or other online provider approved by Surry County Schools. Students and parents have the option for students to take the courses on campus during a designated period at their school or as an off-campus course option as approved by the principal. We understand and agree to the following conditions for virtual course options affiliated with Surry County Schools: • The student and parent/guardian must complete the Virtual Learning Options Parent and Student Agreement for Surry County Schools. • Student and parents are responsible for any and all requirements related to accessing the course and completing the requirements for credit. • The course grades will be calculated in the high school GPA and will reflect on the high school transcript. • Dropping a virtual course taken off campus will reflect in the high school GPA and on the high school transcript as a 69 – failing grade. • Dropping or failing a North Carolina Virtual Public Schools online course taken off campus will require a partial tuition reimbursement of $150 to Surry County Schools. • The virtual courses do affect eligibility for athletic participation and/or driver’s license requirements. If participating in winter or spring sports, a student must pass three units of high school credit to be eligible for participation. • Students who enroll in a virtual course or courses must successfully complete the course(s) in order to be eligible to access additional virtual options. • A student must agree to the release of grades and attendance information to Surry County Schools and to the student’s respective high school. Courses delivered by the Surry Virtual Academy will be delivered through Haiku, our learning management system. The course will appear in your portal once your teacher activates your course. Courses delivered by the North Carolina Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS) will be delivered through their learning management system (Blackboard or Moodle). Students are expected to complete assignments on time and stay in routine communication with their teacher. Students are required to use their Surry County Schools e-mail account for all communications regarding their online class. Student use of email falls under the Surry County Schools technology policies. Courses delivered through the Surry Virtual Academy will follow the same schedule as SCS traditional high schools. The fall semester will begin on August 26, 2013 and end on January 17, 2014. Spring semester will begin on January 21, 2014 and end on June 11, 2014. Courses taken through the North Carolina Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS) will follow the schedule provided by the instructor. Students are required to log into their online course daily and work actively to complete all assignments and assessments according to deadlines set by their teacher. If a student fails to log in for 5 or more consecutive days, they will be in danger of being dropped from their course(s) and receive a failing grade for the course(s). If students have circumstances that prevent them from logging into the course, please notify your teacher promptly. Students taking courses provided by the Surry Virtual Academy may check out a textbook as recommended by the instructor for the course. Textbooks should be obtained from the appropriate content teacher at their home school. Students taking courses through the Surry Virtual Academy are required to participate in a weekly webinar as scheduled by the teacher. If students are unable to attend, they should notify the teacher prior to the session and view the recording of the webinar as soon as possible after the scheduled date. Students taking courses with other providers such as the NCVPS will be required to participate in synchronous sessions as designated by their instructor. Academic dishonesty in online classes will not be tolerated. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, dishonesty on homework or in test-taking, attempting to get credit for another’s work, or assisting another student in such an attempt to otherwise obtaining answers illicitly or illegally. Students engaging in academic dishonesty will receive a zero on the assignment with no option to make it up. In addition, teachers will refer incidents of academic dishonesty to the student’s home school for disciplinary action. Students should have the following supplies to be to used in their online course: • Flash Drive • Head Phones or Ear Buds • Calculator (if taking a math class) EOCs and Measures of Student Learning (MSL) will follow the same testing schedule as other high school courses. Consent for Participation Surry County Schools Virtual Courses We, the undersigned parent(s)/guardian(s) of _______________________________________________________________ hereby consent to his/her participation in a virtual course. If the student participates in the course off-campus, we acknowledge and agree that if we choose to provide transportation between the high school and any site/s as required for participation in the course, we will be responsible for all transportation costs and any and all liability related to such transportation. We hereby release the Surry County Board of Education and its employees and/or agents from any liability whatsoever related to such transportation. We understand that students are not allowed to transport other students. We understand that participation in this course(s) is voluntary, and we hereby release the Surry County Board of Education, its members, its employees, and its agents from any and all liability in this course(s). We further acknowledge that we have read, fully understand, and accept the contents of this document.
