Environmental Science Pacing Chart 2012-2013 Important Points During Instruction Comprehensive curriculum may not follow the order of the text book. Embedding inquiry investigations and process skills into content instruction means shifting the emphasis from teachers presenting information and covering textbook topics to students doing science. In other words, the Science as Inquiry GLEs should be embedded within the content and hands-on activities throughout the year. Also, integrate technology, science in society and engineering, whenever possible. Mandatory Testing Components and Lab Reports To help prepare all students for the ACT, “Science Skills” shall be assessed on every major test. Also, two (2) lab reports per nine weeks are required. One lab is governed from the district level; the other is the choice of the teacher. The following lab activities are mandated by the district and the directions can be found in Moodle in the Core Curriculum course in a folder labeled District Mandated Labs. You will also find lab report formats that you may use. 1st Nine Weeks: Layers of the Earth Web Quest and Model 2nd Nine Weeks: Population Stability Lab 3rd Nine Weeks: Resources and Packaging 4th Nine Weeks: Oil Spill Clean-Up Important Testing Dates Midterm Examinations: December 12 – 19, 2012 (school-based decision) End-of-Course Testing: April 23-May 23, 2013 (school-based decision) Final Examinations: April 23 – May 21, 2013 Before Winter Break Time Aug. 15 – Oct. 3 7 Weeks Environmental Science: Your World, Your Turn Pearson © 2011 Chapter 1: Sections 1-3 Chapter 8: Sections 1-3 Chapter 3: Sections 1-4 Topics CC Units Old Textbook Chapters H = Holt Environmental Science Textbook G = Glencoe Earth Science Textbook Environment Earth (CC: Unit 1) Chapter 2 (H) p. 151, 177, 181 (G) Chapter 1 (H) Chapter 3 (H) Chapter 13-Sec. 1 (H) Key Concepts Scientific Method Lab safety Introduction of environmental science Earth Systems (geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, cryosphere) Energy (non-renewable vs. renewable sources) GLEs SI: 2-4, 6-9, 11, 12 SI: 2-4, 6-9, 11, 12 SE: 20 SE: 1, 6 ESS: 2, 8, 9, 12, 15 SE: 13, 15, 16, 20, 23, 26-28 ESS: 19-22 Oct. 4 Dec. 11 10 Weeks Chapter 4: Chapter 5: Chapter 6: Chapter 7: Sections 1-3 Sections 2-4 Sections 1-3 Sections 1-3 pp. 228 – 236 (G) Chapter 17 (H) Chapter 18 (H) pp. 100-107 (G) Chapter 5-Sec. 1 & 2 (H) Chapter 11-Sec. 1 (H) pp. 231, 254-276, 490, 491 (G) Development & Succession in Ecosystems (CC: Unit 2) Chapter 4 (H) Chapter 6 (H) Chapter 7(H) Chapter 5-Sec. 3 (H) Chapter 8 (H) Chapter 9 (H) Chapter 10 (H) Earth cycles (biogeochemical; hydrological; oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus cycles) SE: 6, 7 ESS: 13-15 Taxonomy Ecosystems & biomes (interrelationship) Adaptation & evolution Biomes Louisiana wetlands Succession Population dynamics Human populations Biodiversity LS: 18, 19 SE: 1, 3, 8 SE: 9 SE: 2 SE 16, 20, 26, 27 ESS: 19, 20, 22 SE: 5 SE: 4, 12 SE: 4, 15, 18, 27 SE: 10, 11, 14 Midterm Examinations: December 12-19, 2012 (school-based decision) After Winter Break Time Pearson Environmental Science: Your World, Your Turn (New Textbook Correlations) Jan. 7 – Mar. 8 10 Weeks Chapter 14: Chapter 10: Chapter 11: Chapter 12: Chapter 13: Sections 1-3 Sections 1-3 Sections 1-3 Sections 1-4 Sections 1-3 Mar. 11May 16 9 Weeks Chapter 14: Chapter 15: Chapter 16: Chapter 19: Section 3 Sections 2-3 Sections 1-4 Sections 1-3 Topics CC Units Textbook Chapters Resources & Resource Management (CC: Unit 3) Chapter 11Sec. 2 (H) Chapter 14 (H) Chapter 15 (H) Chapter 16 (H) Chapter 19 (H) Environmental Awareness & Responsible Actions Key Concepts GLEs Water Land & land use Food & agriculture Mining & mining resources recycling SE: SE: SE: SE: SE: 13-18 13-18 13-18 13-18 13-18 Water pollution Air pollution Ozone layer & green house effect Waste & waste management SE: SE: SE: SE: 19-28 19-28 19-28 19-28 Chapter 9: Sections 1-4 Chapter 2: Sections 1-3 (CC: Unit 4) Chapter 11Sec. 3 (H) Chapter 13Sec. 2 & 3 (H) Chapter 20 (H) Chapter 21 (H) Environment & human health Environmental policies SE: 19-28 SE: 19-28 Final Examinations: May 17 – 24, 2013 (school-based decision)
