CHEMISTRY QUESTIONS DISCUSSED IN THE WORKSHOP
1. Chapter - Haloalkanes and Haloarenes
The book Silent Spring by Carson outlines the danger of DDT to both humans and
environment and opposed the use of DDT persticide that came into use in Worldwar II and
was banned in USA in 1972. After that, an anti DDT campaign eventually spread to other
countries, including developing nations like India, where the pesticide was being used to kill
mosquitoes as it is the cheapest insecticide. Some farmers are still using DDT.
Contextual Question:
a. As a student of chemistry would you promote the use of DDT or not? Justify
(1)
b. Give the structural formula and IUPAC name of DDT.
(1)
Value based question:
What are the values associated with the above decisions?(any two values)
(1)
Value Point:
(1) Environment sensitivity
(2) Awareness of harmful effect of DDT

2. Chapter - Electrochemistry
Production of electricity by thermal plants is not a very efficient method because it requires fossil
fuels and create pollution also. In such situations, some alternative like fuel cell can be a better
option to produce electricity, because it is renewable and non- polluting source of energy.
3
Contextual Question:
Suggest two materials other than hydrogen that can be used as fuel in fuel cells.
1
Value based question:
What is your opinion about hydrogen economy? Give any two relevant points.
Value points:
1) Environmental sensitivity
2) Concerned about nature- judicious use of natural resources.

1. Solutions:
Rahul is fond of eating boiled eggs in Breakfast but he needs to leave for his work early at 6
am. Sometimes in hurry, the eggs he boils are only half boiled due to shortage of time and
he has to eat outside and suffers from health problems. His mother tells him that he must
avoid eating outside and to cook faster he can add a little amount of salt while boiling eggs.
Contextual Question:
How do you justify quick cooking by adding salt?
1
State another example where the same property is used to benefit humans
1
Value based question:
State two values his mother is trying to teach Rahul?
1
Ans. Addition of salt in water elevates the boiling point of water therefore the solution will
attain higher temperature and cook faster.
Value point: self sufficiency, time management, saving money, concern for health.

2. Alkyl Halides:
Bhola Ram, a farmer in a remote village supplies vegetable in a nearby town. To have better
production of crops, he had been using some chemicals. To give them cleaner and fresh
appearance, he got the vegetables washed in a stream before loading in the trucks. It
definitely impressed the wholesalers and Bhola Ram also earned good money but the fish in
the stream reduced in number.
Contextual Question:
What could be the possible cause of death of fish? What alternative should be given to the
farmer so as to keep up his income but not harm the aquatic life?
Value based question:
What value does Bhola Ram imbibe?
3
Ans. He must have been using pesticides like DDT which kill the aquatic life. In its place the
biodegradable pesticides must be used.
2
Value Point: Environmental Sensitivity, awareness of harmful effects of chemicals

3. Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers
A helper in Chemistry lab was an alcohol abuser. Once he was tempted to steal some alcohol
supplied in laboratory but his other friend warned him that the sample was not fit for
drinking. Moreover he could be caught and jailed for his act of stealing.
Contextual Question:
Which chemical is generally mixed and why? What are the consequences of consuming such
alcohol?
2
Value based question:
Name the value that the friend is trying to teach.
1
Ans. Ethanol is an intoxicating substance. To avoid the misuse of ethanol, a small quantity of
Methanol is mixed with it.
Methanol is poisonous.
Its consumption can lead to blindness and even sometimes death.
Value point: Honesty, concern for own health

5. p-block elements
A gas which is pale blue has a characteristic odour and harmless in low concentration. The
oxides emitted from exhaust system of super sonic jet aeroplanes reduces the concentration
of this gaseous layer in upper atmosphere. In the light of the above account, answer the
following questions:
Contextual Question:
(i) Human activities imposing threats to this layer
2
Value based question:
(ii) Write two values associated with the safety of this gaseous layer.
1
Ans. (i) The gas is ozone. Use of freons in aerosols, and refrigerators and ACs destroy this
layer so their use dhould be minimised.
(ii) Environmental Sensitivity,
Awareness, Concern.
