Psalter Week 4 __________________________________________________________________________________________________ 28th Sunday Ordinary Time Year B Sunday 11th October 2015 __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Readings for This Week Wisdom 7:7-11; Ps89; Hebrews 4:12-13; Mark 10:17-30 Readings for Next Week Isaiah 53:10-11; Ps. 32; Hebrews 4:14-16; Mark 10:35-45 ____________________________________________________________________________________ Reflection from Fr. Hilary: All Human Life Deserves the Greatest Respect You may have seen recently a series of 3 television programmes entitles “The Extraordinary Making of You”. Very beautifully done. It was fascinating to see our development over nine months in the womb. It should only conjure up for us a wonderful sense of awe, reverence and dignity. Needless to say there was no mention of abortion and of the destruction which it is. That would have spoiled the programme. But what about the appalling spoiling which abortion is? Yes, indeed, especially when you remember there are between 500 and 600 abortions every day in this country alone – every day. Now one has to be very understanding towards any person who is in a terrible state contemplating an abortion. But after nearly 50 years since the Abortion Act, plenty of people have little qualms and treat the whole matter lightly. Between 500 and 600 a day. Any sense of awe, reverence and dignity goes out of the door. All other stages of human life from womb to tomb are of greatest importance too of course. Let me finish with a quotation from the late Malcom Muggeridge, the broadcaster. Amid the serious points he makes, one can smile at him getting a “dig” at certain people. He says: “As a matter of fact, under present-day conditions, it is extremely improbable that Jesus would have been permitted to be born at all. Mary’s pregnancy in poor circumstances and with the father unknown, would have been an obvious case for an abortion and her talk of having conceived as a result of the intervention of the Holy Spirit would have pointed to the need for psychiatric treatment and made the case for terminating her pregnancy even stronger. Thus our generation, needing a Saviour more, perhaps, than that has existed, would be too humane to allow one to be born, too enlightened to permit the Light of the World to shine in a darkness that grows ever more oppressive.” Please keep for prayerful reflection. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Altar Servers Rota: The new rota will be available soon.
