Shoscombe’s Great British Bake-off!
Move over the Great British Bake Off, the
Great Shoscombe Bake Off has arrived!
Inspired by the popular television series, the
children, as well as parents and residents rose
to the challenge of becoming Shoscombe
Baker of the Year and raised almost £4,000 for
school funds. Young bakers got to grips with
decorating their cakes at Shoscombe.
Organised by FoSSA, the contestants arrived
at school with their cupcakes readymade to a
simple recipe. Armed with icing equipment, the
entrants decorated their entries in front of a
team of judges headed by Kim Western who is
manger of the Lakeland kitchenware shop in
Bath, former teacher Katie Watson, who had
run the school cookery club, and head teacher
Jane Gascoigne.
All the children in the school have been
working with local artist Edwina Bridgeman to
create a work entitled ‘Orchards’ using
recycled materials. The work has been
installed at the top of the stairs and features
an apple and a pear tree populated with the
great variety wildlife that you might find in an
Orchard. The project celebrates our local
history of fruit production and has been funded
as part of our current Comenius project
‘Tomorrow’s Garden’. Many thanks to Jo
Harris and Lou David for their art and drilling
skills!!
Bath Music Festival
Comenius Art Project
As part of the opening night of Bath Music
Festival, Shoscombe Choir including children
from Years 1-6 sang in Bath Abbey alongside
children from several other primary schools.
The children formed a massed choir to
perform a work called Little Book of Monsters.
The choir was accompanied by professional
musicians and conducted by the composer
Stephen Deazley. The children had attended
several rehearsals and gave a fantastic
performance.
Many thanks to all of you – we raised over
£400 for the NSPCC! Fantastic for a small
school.
Year 1 and 2
Pupils in Year 1/2 have been reading fiction
and non-fiction books on the subject of
crocodiles. They have also used computers to
find scientific facts about crocodiles. Here,
Jacob in Y5/6, is teaching Noah and Jess how
to use an iPad to help their research. We
would like to thank Mrs Tombs for donating the
iPad to the school.
Year 3 and 4
Newly elected Chairman Neil Butters visited
Shoscombe on Monday May 20th, to make a
very important announcement to all of the
children regarding their new Prime Minister.
Shoscombe is the first school Councillor
Butters has visited since being appointed
chairman. While the year 6 children sat their
SAT tests, the year 5’s were busy putting
together manifestos, campaigning and
presenting their ideas to all the other classes.
All children were involved in placing votes on
Friday 17th May and these were counted by
the outgoing Prime Minister, Abigail Craig
Jones. As is sometimes the case in elections,
the exit poll produced a different result to the
election itself.
Neil Butters was very impressed with our
election process and commented
“I think this is a great model in times when
young people are becoming increasingly
disinterested in politics.” He went on to say
that ‘Shoscombe is a great school with a
unique government.” The new Prime Minister
will be Amy Edwards who will take up her
position in September.
Year 5 and 6
A group of children from year 3 and 4 have
been taking part in The Trinity Art College
‘Discover’ Programme. Jo Harris has been
working with the group on a Monday
afternoon. They have thoroughly enjoyed their
time with her so a big thank you to Jo for all
her help. From September an after school club
will be running allowing all children to have the
opportunity to take part in the Arts Award
Programme.
Year 5 Government Elections
The Year 5 and Year 6 children are very
excited about their forthcoming summer show
which will be The Wizard of Oz. The children
had great fun auditioning for parts and have
begun rehearsing their lines and actions. The
performance will provide a great vehicle to
teach and learn drama, dance, music and art.
