Ch 8 • To learn about the 5 components of health related fitness Success Criteria F-G I can list all 5 health related fitness components D-E I can describe the meaning of each one B-C I can answer short response and multiple choice questions on health related fitness A*-A I can answer long response question about health related fitness Health, Exercise, Fitness and Performance You must know the definitions of these 4 key terms HEALTH EXERCISE FITNESS PERFORMANCE Health, Exercise, Fitness and Performance Exercise is any form of physical activity which improves health and fitness Health, Exercise, Fitness and Performance Health is having complete mental, physical and social wellbeing, and is not just being free from disease HEALTH Physical wellbeing Mental wellbeing Social wellbeing Health, Exercise, Fitness and Performance Fitness is being able to meet the demands of your environment Everyone has a different environment and fitness is relative Health, Exercise, Fitness and Performance Performance is how well a task is completed A good performance A bad performance Health Related Fitness There are 5 components of health related fitness: Cardiovascular Endurance Cardiovascular Endurance is the ability to exercise the whole body for long periods of time Important in any sport that requires you to exercise the whole body for long periods • Games players • Endurance athletes Muscular Endurance Muscular endurance is the ability to use certain muscles repeatedly without getting tired Important in any sport that requires you do reproduce the same movements over and over again. • Tennis player • Swimmer • Long distance runner Strength Strength is the amount of force than a muscle can create against a resistance Important when a great force is required. E.g. • lifting heavy weights • A rugby player pushing in a scrum. • kicking a ball really hard Flexibility Flexibility is the range of movement possible at a joint Most sports require some degree of Flexibility • A games player needs flexibility when stretching / reaching for the ball • Gymnasts and dancers need a massive amount of flexibility to perform specialist moves e.g. the splits Body Composition Body composition is the percentage of the body that is made up of muscle, fat and bone Ectomorph Thin Endomorph Fat Mesomorph Muscular Body Composition Body composition is the percentage of the body that is made up of muscle, fat and bone Most sports require a certain body type to be successful Ectomorph Endomorph Mesomorph Learning Objectives. Ch 9 To learn about the 6 Skill Related Fitness Components Success Criteria F-G I can list all 6 skill related fitness components D-E I can describe the meaning of each one B-C I can answer short response and multiple choice questions on skill related fitness A*-A I can answer long response question about skill related fitness Skill Related Fitness There are 6 components of skill related fitness: A B C P R S Agility Balance Coordination Power Reaction Time speed Speed Speed is how quickly you can move the whole body or a part of the body Speed is required in most sports Leg speed is needed by sprinters and games players to sprint fast Hand speed is needed by Boxers to throw fast blinding punches Power Power is the combination of speed and strength in 1 movement. The best way to think of power is as explosive strength Power is required for explosive sporting actions • A Tennis player hitting a hard 150mph ace serve • A long jumper exploding in to the air Reaction Time Reaction Time is the time in between a stimulus and movement Many sports require fast reflexes • A sprinter needs fast reactions to get a quick start in a race • A Badminton player needs fast reactions to react to where the shuttle has been hit Balance Balance is the ability to retain your centre of mass over your base of support In simple terms balance is being able to remain stable and not fall over Balance is required in many sporting actions when turning sharply, running, jumping and landing Agility Agility is the ability to rapidly change the position of the body Agility is required in sports to change direction or body position very quickly • Games players need agility to turn sharply when dribbling • A high jumper needs agility to change body position when jumping over the bar Coordination Coordination is being able to coordinate what you see with movement of the arms or legs Hand eye coordination • Needed to time the striking of the ball in Tennis, Cricket, Rounders, Badminton etc Foot eye coordination • Needed to time the striking of the ball in football
