Carbohydrates
Objective 7.1: I can identify, explain, and give examples of Carbohydrates.

All carbohydrates have the general formula: (CH2O)n
Carbohydrates are sugars that provide energy.
The names of carbohydrates end with –ose.
Monomer = 1 unit
Polymer = many units
Monosaccharaides = 1 Monomer
Disaccharides = 2 monomers
Polysaccharides = Many monomers
The monomer for carbohydrates is glucose.
• The polymer for carbohydrates is starch.
• Monomers are made through a hydrolysis reaction. This where water is added to break the bond.
• Polymers are made through a dehydration reaction. This is where water is removed to make the
bonds.
Objective 7.2: I can explain how ATP drives chemical reactions.
ATP = Adenosine TriPhophate
• What is it? Energy Molecule
• How does it store energy? Energy is stored in the bonds. Energy is released when ATP is broken into
ADP.
• Why is it needed? ATP is used for cellular activities. ATP is recreated when ADP +P rejoin
Objective 7.3: I can label the structures and explain the functions of the internal parts of a leaf.

Cuticle: helps prevent water loss
Epidermis: protection
Palisade Mesophyll: Where photosynthesis occurs
Xylem: transports water
Phloem: transports food
Stomata: gas exchange and transpiration (water evaporation)
Guard cells: regulate stomata
Objective 7.4: I can label the structures of the chloroplast.
Chlorophyll: the green
Pigment found in plants,
Algae, and cyanobacteria.
Carotanoid pigments: give
Plants yellow, red, and
Orange colors.
All lights are absorbed,
Except green. Green light is
Reflected.
Objective 7.5: I can analyze multiple graphs to determine which factors affect the rate of
photosynthesis.
Objective 7.6: I can explain the reaction for photosynthesis.
• Byproduct of photosynthesis: Oxygen
• Autotrophs: make their own food through photosynthesis
Objective 7.6: I can explain where the light dependent reaction occurs in photosynthesis and the
reactants and products of the light dependent reaction.
• Occurs in the Thylakoid
• Water is split during
This reaction!!
Objective 7.7: I can explain where Calvin Cycle occurs in photosynthesis and the reactants and
products of the light dependent reaction.
• Occurs in the Stroma
