Congratulations on your accomplishments! Here you will find the requirements for consideration into Algonac High School’s National Honor Society. Please provide information using as much detail as possible. NOTHING prior to entering high school counts. ONLY things you have done or been involved in while in high school (not necessarily in the building) should be included. Be sure to print out all necessary forms and complete all requirements. Your attention to detail will be considered part of your application. Please return ALL items that you are required to hand in to Mrs. Wynkoop in the Library Media Center by 2:45 p.m. on Monday, September 17th. PART 1: Teacher Recommendation Forms (PROVIDED) Print 2 Forms (2 pages for each form) and ask TWO academic teachers to comment. Forms will be returned directly to Mrs. Wynkoop, not to the student. Please do not request recommendations from the following teachers as they serve on faculty council: Ms. Urban, Mr. Cesaro, Mr. Lucka, Ms. Scharnweber, Mr. Welchner PART 2: Essay Please write an essay on what character means to you. The essay should be typed, and approximately one page in length, or 350 words. You may use the following quotes to focus your writing, or choose a theme of your own. You may attach your essay on a separate sheet. Joan Didion PART 3: Demonstration of NHS Characteristics (CHART PROVIDED) You MUST be sure to cover the following topics for consideration into National Honor Society: Community Service- Things that you have done for the betterment of the community without any compensation. For example: walk-a-thons, donations and various drives. You could also include church or synagogue groups, scouts, etc. Ideally a candidate should demonstrate service to the school and to the community. Co-Curricular Activities- All activities, clubs, teams, musical groups, etc… Leadership Positions- All elected or appointed positions held in school, community or work. Were you responsible to motivate others? Direct others? Examples could include: Student Council representative, class officer, club officer, committee chairperson, lead chair, team captain or co-captain, editor, area manager, community leader. Recognitions, Awards and Work Experience- Recognitions, honors, awards to support your bid to be selected as a member to AHS National Honor Society. Do you have a job? Have you had a job in the past? You will TYPE your information on the provided chart. If you need more spaces than those provided, simply press “TAB” when you get to the last box and more boxes will be added automatically. Part 4: Letters of Recommendation You are asked to submit two letters of recommendation from people who know you and would recommend you for membership in the National Honor Society. Faculty members may not complete a teacher recommendation AND a letter of recommendation. At least one of the letters will need to be from someone outside of the school system. Consider asking community leaders, religious leaders, neighbors, former or current employers, coaches, etc for the letters of recommendation. They should reference how you have demonstrated character, leadership and service. LOR from parents will not be considered. Part 5: Copy of transcript. You may request this from the student services office or Mrs. Blair. Do NOT wait until the day the packet is due! Student services is a busy place. PART 6: Disclaimer (PROVIDED) You and your parent/guardian must sign and submit the disclaimer that has been posted by the deadline with the other materials to Mrs. Wynkoop.
