Active Directory and MyBSU
MyBSU – Has links to all sorts of useful sites (email, BSU forms, E-Timesheets, Employee Self Service, software
downloads, D2L, and more). You can also click on the “personal information” tab and update your information
if it is incorrect or it changes.
Active Directory account - all BSU employees have a username and password that allows them to login
to our network. This username and password allows you to access the MyBSU portal, email, network storage,
allows you to print and lets you logon to any BSU computer and connect to BSU wireless. *If you are unsure of
your username and password, please contact the helpdesk at 218-755-3777 or helpdesk@bemidjistate.edu
Data Security - BSU Computers are setup to authenticate (login) to Active Directory. For PC users, data in your
“My Documents” folder will be synchronized with the server / storage area network (SAN) whenever you are on
campus (or if you VPN in). Mac users will still need to back up their data manually. If you choose a Mac OS, a
tech support staff will show you how to use your network storage accounts. Users also have access to a
departmental shared group storage drive, sometimes multiple groups depending on your position.
Reminder: It is each user’s responsibility to make sure their files are being backed up. We recommend PC users
store data in their My Documents folder and Mac users back up data on their hard drive to the file server on a
regular, scheduled basis. Other options include an external hard drive or jump drive, burning to a DVD, etc.
Email Security - We use Outlook for email. Tech Support offers one-on-one training if you would like. We can
also help you set up your email on your smart phone or other handheld device.
StarID, D2L, eServices and ISRS
StarID – Is a MnSCU generated username/password that allows you to access a variety of programs, etc. A
couple of common ones are eServices, staff timesheets and EMS scheduling. You need to activate your StarID
by visiting https://starid.mnscu.edu/. You can also change your password on this site.
eServices – This site is mainly used by students to register, pay bills on line and more. Faculty use this site to
enter grades, see their advisees, etc. Most staff won’t really need to use it. Records Office resets forgotten
passwords. (Username & password is StarID)
D2L – D2L (Desire2Learn) is BSU’s (and MnSCU’s) online learning site. Everyone has an account in order to
complete Code of Conduct, Public Info Private Data, Sexual Harassment and other required training courses.
Faculty also use D2L to teach courses https://bemidjistate.ims.mnscu.edu/ If you forget your password for D2L,
choose the “forgot password” link on the D2L login page to receive an email in your BSU email account. **as of
8/4/14 Username & password is StarID
ISRS – Account necessary for purchasing, accessing student records, etc. Accounts are requested using
this form and sent to Russ Hansen or myself (Melissa Arneson).
EARS — Early Alert, Retention and Success is a simple tool to help assist students when they're facing issues
that impact their academic success. EARS connects faculty, staff, advisors, and retention staff, making it easy to
share a concern about a student and record steps that have been made to help. Link available in MyBSU!
Review of Software and Hardware
Software - *Office 2010 is installed on computers using Windows OS and Office 2011 is on the Mac OS
**VPN client (accessing BSU network storage from off campus) available please discuss options with helpdesk
***BSU currently uses Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection and our mail server is protected by
IronPort which will reduce a large percentage of junk mail before it even reaches your email.
A multitude of other software programs are available; some at no charge and some for purchase. (See the
software purchases section at the end of this document and please do not install any software without
discussing first with Brodie Karger, software manager.)
Reminder: It is each user’s responsibility to verify their machine is receiving the Microsoft Security Updates. If you bring it on
campus and connect to our network somewhat frequently, you should be okay. For instructions on how to update your
machine manually, please contact the helpdesk.
Hardware – All faculty and staff are given a computer to use. Currently, staff is taken care by their department
and faculty request a laptop through Melissa Arneson at Tech Support. All purchases are done through
Technical Support.
