A dream come true
Since my childhood I had had the dream of seeing California. From
films and magazines I knew a lot about the dazzling world of
Hollywood.
I was maybe eleven or twelve years old when I read many papers
and magazines about the lives and love affairs of film stars. I was
fascinated to read about the luxurious houses where they lived and
the cars that they drove. I wished some day I would be able to see the place where it was happening.
Years later, I went to California to visit a few friends of mine. I planned to spend my time with them
and do a lot of sightseeing. I went to Disneyland, located in Anaheim, which has been California’s premier
family destination for decades. This massive amusement park is home to all kinds of rides, games,
shows, and entertainment, complete with restaurants and hotels.
I also visited the Chinese Theatre, one of Hollywood’s most iconic and memorable sites. On the tour,
you’ll learn the history of the theatre as well as some fun facts about Hollywood premieres held there in
the past (including Star Wars in 1977). While I was there, I took a stroll along the free-to-enjoy Hollywood
Walk of Fame, where hundreds of film stars have left their handprints and signatures along the sidewalk.
However, when I saw the Beverly Hills mansions, I felt excited. And when I visited Universal Studios,
I was very surprised how they could represent the ocean in a small lake, the Vietnam War on a piece of
land, and a street in New York, London or Paris without real buildings. I admired the technological
advances, but I understood that Hollywood is an unreal world. It’s just a dream, but I made my dream
come true.

Read the text and questions (20 – 26).
For each question, mark the correct letter – A, B or C.
School exchange trips
Are you going on a school exchange next
summer? You’re not alone!
Thousands of British teens spend a week in a
stranger’s home in a foreign country every
summer. Many of them make friends for life.
Others say they will never go back!
Staying with a British family? You may worry about…
• the food: British food used to be a joke. Thanks to TV chefs, foreign travel and
immigrants, it’s got much better in the last ten years.
• the language: the majority of British teens didn’t use to study a language at school –
in fact only 40% can speak French. This means you will have to speak English more!
Our advice
• Tell the family about any food you don’t like or won’t eat. Even if the food looks funny,
try it – you might like it!
• If you’re reading this, you know you can speak good English. Have a go! If you don’t
want to speak, you can listen and learn.
• Be prepared for the changeable British weather! Take a raincoat and wellies for wet
weather, a jumper for cold weather and sunglasses and suncream for hot weather.
Teens say
This British class of 15-year-old students from Bromsgrove School went on an Easter
school exchange in Berlin. Here are their top tips:
• “Take enough money.”
• “Make sure your mobile phone will work abroad – then you’ll be able to text your friends
at any time.”
• “The first day with your host family will be a bit strange – give it some time, try not to
text or call your friends immediately.”
Their teacher says
“School visits are a good way to make friends abroad. You’ll probably have a lot in common
with the teenager you stay with – you’ll have the same gadgets and like the same music.”

My summer story
It was midnight when I awoke from a dreamless sleep. My family and I were staying in a beach

When I got there, I was overwhelmed at how incredibly awesome it was! At 1.00 a.m. we all went
to the beach and got into the water. And then, standing near the sea, I saw… my parents. They
both started yelling at me.
Finally, I had the chance to say, “Please, just forgive me for what I’ve done.”
We all ended up having a really great summer, even though I was grounded for most of it.

Ellie: Wouldn’t you like to go away for the weekend? The weather forecast is good.
Grace: That’s a good idea. Why don’t we take a train down to the seaside? Or we could borrow
my dad’s car.
Ellie: Let’s stay in that great hotel in Brighton.
Grace: Or maybe we should do something more exciting. Why not go camping?
Ellie: Oh, no! I don’t fancy campsites. If you prefer the beauty of the countryside, I’d rather go to
my grandparents’ farm.
Grace: No way. Let’s enjoy the weekend on a sunny beach and get a suntan.
3.
Joe: The weather’s beautiful today, isn’t it?
Gordon: Yeah, it sure is. I love sunny, warm weather.
Joe: Me too. I’m going to the lake after school for a swim.
Gordon: I hope I find enough time to go hiking in the mountains. Summer’s almost over, so we
should make the most of it, shouldn’t we?
Joe: Yeah. I listened to the weather forecast on the radio yesterday and they say we’ll have
rainy weather next week.
Gordon: Well, so long as it isn’t windy, I don’t mind rainy days.
Joe: I do, sunny days make me feel happier.
Gordon: Catch you later.

Lucy: No, but my feet don’t hurt anymore.
Eva: If they are comfortable, then they’re worth every penny.
Lucy: You might want to buy a pair. They are also very fashionable.

This is what she says:
A big “Hi” from my holiday! I’m exhausted from walking around this mega city. My legs are
shaking! I really want to see everything here, but my feet are killing me. It’s a fascinating city,
Madrid, so many museums and other stuff to see. I am trying to learn a bit of Spanish but as
you know, I don’t learn languages very easily. Typical Brit!! There are loads of young guys at
the hostel. I met a student from home, from London, Mark, and we had lunch and spent the
afternoon together. We hired bikes.
He’s OK, but rides too fast for me! Right now, I’m sitting in a street café near the Prado. I’m
having ice tea! It’s time to relax.
I’m really enjoying the trip!! Bye for now.

I’ve wanted to be Spider-Man since I was three. I always felt I was Peter Parker. He’s great for
skinny boys like me. It’s every skinny’s boy fantasy to fight bigger people and win – and that’s
what Peter Parker does!
Were you bullied at school?
Yes, I was bullied in my first school until I was 12. There was a kid who was really mean to me,
and I just didn’t understand why. That’s when I needed ‘Spidey’ in my life – he gave me hope!
Why do so many teens identify with Spider-Man?
Peter Parker, like many teens, doesn’t know who he is. He’s a normal teenage kid rebelling
against his situation. Spider-Man shows us how difficult it is to always be good.
What was it like putting on Spider-Man’s costume?
It was awesome. You realise that it’s a big part for any normal person to fill.
You were born in Los Angeles but you moved to
Britain when you were three. You grew up just outside
London. Which do you prefer – the USA or the UK?
I love both places and I feel equally at home in both. I’m lucky to have the choice.

• Usually, during the weekends I do a lot of different things. Sometimes, when it’s raining, I watch
a film or go to the cinema. If the weather is good, I invite some friends to eat an ice cream or
just to go for a walk.
• Yes I do. I play board games with a group of friends on Wednesday.
• Well, during my holidays I like to go to the beach. I can’t imagine spending a summer and not
feeling the warm sand under my feet. I really like to be with my friends there. We play volleyball,
cards or we just say silly things and laugh.
• Yes, most of my free time is spent with my friends. I like being at home, with my parents and my
brother, but I have more fun with my friends when we go out. Usually, during the week I don’t
go out because I have to study and there’s a lot of homework,

UNIT 1 – ON THE MOVE
but whenever I can, at weekends, I go out with them.
Part 2
Student A: I think I should buy a cap for my brother because he always wears one on sunny
days. I could give my sister a tote bag. But she’s very picky with bags.
Student B: Why don’t you give your brother a cool T-shirt?
Boys his age like wearing a different T-shirt every day.
Student A: Well, maybe you’re right. I’ll give him a black one.
The one he’s got is almost worn out. He’s worn it so much! What about my sister?
Student B: If I were you, I wouldn’t buy her a tote bag.
But, considering how picky she is with bags, you’d better give her something else.
How about that teapot in the shape of the iconic double decker bus and some tea tins?
Student A: That’s not a good idea. She hates tea.
Student B: Maybe you could give her a cool watch.
Student A: OK, I’ll agree with that. So, I’ll buy a T-shirt for my brother and a watch for my sister.
Student B: That’s a good decision.
Part 3
Student A: The picture shows the following sports: football, basketball…
Football is a game played by two teams of 11 players each, which have to score goals by kicking
a football into a goal. The team which scores the most number of goals is the winner. You normally
play this game or a football pitch (also known as a football field or soccer field). You need a Tshirt, shorts, football boots, socks and a football to play this game.
Student B: The picture shows some extreme sports: climbing, surfing, bodyboarding, snorkeling,
sea kayaking…
Surfing is the sport of riding on a wave on a special board. You can do this sport individually and
need a wetsuit, a surfboard and other accessories. Surfing is both an exciting sport and an
excellent workout.
Part 4
Student A: From all the sports shown in the pictures, my favourite is football.
Student B: I also love football because it is a fast game which requires great stamina, foot skills
and the ability to control the movement of a ball. My favourite players are Cristiano Ronaldo from
Portugal and Wayne Rooney from England.
Student A: I agree with what you’ve said so far. Looking back at the pictures, I’ve played some
of the sports they show such as basketball and volleyball.
Student B: Oh, yes. In our physical education lessons we sometimes play these games. I’ve
never tried extreme sports, though. Some of them may be dangerous.
Student A: Neither have I. But I’d like to try surfing because I enjoy doing water sports or
activities, like swimming.
Student B: That’s a good idea. Perhaps we could learn how to surf next summer.
