Author of Open Source Analysis Project (OSAP) research paper for the Department of Defense
entitled The Murle Tribe of South Sudan. My paper examined the Cultural differences
between the Murle, Nuer and Dinka as a contributing factor to the ongoing conflict in SE
Jonglei state. Weapon proliferation intensified cattle raids, women and children abduction.
This has led to a government harsh intervention, collection of weapons from the Murle, and
the rebellion of David Yau Yau. My research focus was the complex nature of the conflict in
South Sudan, specifically in the Murle land, was originally based on cultural differences that
affected the coexisting process of tribes moving into and out of Jonglei state. The Murle’s
unique age-setting tradition set the tribe apart from Dinka and Nuer and later became one of
the reasons that the tribe now is able to settle its differences with the central government in a
self- administered region. As Jonglei is known as the largest, most populous and oil-rich state
in South Sudan, the conflict over this vast area turned after the independence of 2011, to a
gain of new geographies in the future development heart of South Sudan as believed by many.
Thus, fights intensified between the tribes in SE Jonglei seeking water sources and land for
grazing, as each tribe wanted to gain the most land. The spread of automatic guns, a
consequence of the civil war, has complicated the situation. This has forced the government
to be part of the conflict instead of finding solutions to it, as its disarmament programs failed
to settle the situation in the area and further provoked the Murle tribe. David Yau Yau, now
the leader of the tribe, fought his way to a point at which the government awarded him and
his tribe a self-administered area in Jonglei state where he report directly to the president of
South Sudan.
A summary of findings was presented at the English for Heritage Language Speakers OSAP
Symposium at Georgetown University, June 19-20, 2014. Paper is available at the following
