Cosmetology: Professional Image Proper personal hygiene is an important aspect of having a professional image. For this role play, students must show what the appropriate approach would be for the scenario and give some proper personal hygiene techniques. Quayvon and Sofia are both hair stylists at Modern Hair, one of the more popular salons in town. After a lunch break one day, Sofia was at her station and suddenly noticed a very bitter, sour smell. Quayvon was in the station next to her. So she went to their manager, Randy, to let him know that Quayvon has a bad odor and that it should be corrected before a client of his has to say something. What should Randy say to Quayvon? How should he approach him? What are good techniques to give him for making sure you stay fresh throughout your work day? Page 1 Cosmetology: Successful Communication “The customer is always right,” is a common phrase used in the service industry. For this role play, students will have to properly and professionally address a client complaint. Jane, a lady in her mid-thirties with long brunette hair, came into the salon for the third time this year. She has always been very pleased with the service provided by hair stylist Antonio, but this last appointment wasn’t quite the same. She came into the salon knowing that she wanted something new and different. She wasn’t quite sure what style she wanted to go for, but she knew she wanted to have short hair. Jane told Antonio to go ahead and cut six inches off her hair. He thought it was a great idea, so he did as she asked. Once they had the finished product, she looked in the mirror and was horrified. She did not like it at all. She thought her husband wouldn’t like it. She was extremely upset. She told Antonio that he didn’t do it the way she wanted. How would you approach the complaint? How do you resolve the issue? What do you say or do in order to keep that client from leaving, never coming back, and spreading the word about how awful the service was at your business? Page 2 Esthetics: Professional Image An esthetician’s job is to make and keep their clients looking gorgeous and fresh. Therefore, an esthetician must look gorgeous and fresh as well. Page 3 Esthetics: Successful Communication Many times repeat clients forms a bond of trust with their esthetician. This sometimes leads to the client finding it hard to distinguish between a professional and personal relationship. Cindy has been coming into Urban Salon every four to six weeks to get a facial for the past five months. She always makes appointments with the same esthetician, Laura. Laura is very professional and has been in the business for about 13 years. Cindy has become more and more trustworthy of Laura and has recently been gossiping and talking about her personal life with Laura, always asking for advice. How should Laura handle this situation? Should she engage in this type of conversation? What are some tips for Laura when she is handling this communication barrier? Page 4 Nail Technology: Professional Image The demands of the job of a nail technician can put them at risk of developing long-lasting discomfort in their shoulders and back. Using proper ergonomics is imperative to protect your body. Mindy is a nail technician at Beauty Nails. She has been working there for 6 months and is starting to complain about chronic back and wrist pain. What can she do to reduce this pain? What are some good posture and body movement guidelines for Mindy to take as she is working with a client? What are some different exercises to practice every day in order to relieve stress from repetitive movements? Page 5 Nail Technology: Successful Communication Word of mouth is one the best advertising techniques for new businesses, especially if it is through a happy and pleased client. For this role play, students should explain successful communication in order to advertise a new business. Perfect Nails, the newest nail salon in town, opened just a couple of weeks ago. The salon is in a small shopping center that is not often crowded. The owners of Perfect Nails, Janet and Brian, are both trying to figure out what they should do in order to stand out in this town where there are many nail salons. What type of promotions should Perfect Nails run? How can Brian, Janet, and other employees promote their business while still in the workplace? What would you do in order to have repeat clients? How do you make your salon more competitive? Page 6 Barbering: Professional Image As a barber, clientele look at you as a walking billboard. The way employees dress, groom, talk, and walk will be seen by clients. This will make the first impression of someone coming into your shop. Gary is a barber at Al’s Barber Shop, a well-known barber shop in town. He has been there as long as it has been open. He is a great barber, but he has one issue. He is not very clean. He constantly eats in front of customers, then doesn’t wash his hands before he is going to perform a service on a client. He also often has stains on his clothes. One day, a client actually complained about it, but because he has been there for so long, employees are intimidated by him and do not want to mention anything to him. How should this problem be dealt with? What are some tips that can be given to Gary in order for him to stay clean throughout the day? Page 7 Barbering: Successful Communication As an employee at a business, one should leave drama and negativity outside of the workplace. Howie and Floyd are well known barbers in town.
