FOREWORD
This program outline is for use in the esthetician training program and will be used as a
guide for instructors in the classroom portions of this training.
The esthetician program is delivered in a format which combines in-school-theory,
practical and work-based training, all designed to meet the competency standards and
profile defined by the industry.
Practical demonstration and student participation should always be integrated with
classroom sessions.
Safe working practices, though not always specified in each of the competencies and
learning tasks, are an implied part of the program and should be stressed throughout
the training.
This program outline includes a list of recommended reference resources that are
available to support the learning objectives and the minimum practical requirements
needed to support instruction.
The esthetician program is designed to be modularized to allow students to take any
combination of modules, or the full program and to allow schools to provide any
combination of modules. There is some overlap between certain modules, so
examinations should be provided in a way that tests all necessary skills with minimal
overlap.
Finally, this program requires knowledge about various branches of science for
estheticians. Each module details science components integrated into the learning
outcomes and objectives. Appendix A provides an outline of which specific science
topics are necessary for the relevant modules.

JOB DESCRIPTION
ESTHETICIAN
Workers in this unit group provide facial and body treatments designed to enhance an
individual's physical appearance. They are employed in beauty spas/salons, electrolysis
studios, scalp treatment and hair replacement clinics and other similar establishments
and in cosmetic departments of retail establishments such as pharmacies and
department stores, or they may be self-employed.
The following is a summary of main duties for some occupations in this unit group:

Estheticians give facial and other body treatments using specialized products
and techniques.
Cosmeticians advise customers on the use of make-up and other beauty
products and apply make-up to customers; may specialize in applying makeup to
models or other individuals for special occasions.
Electrologists remove unwanted hair permanently from client's face or body using
needle method only, specialized hair removal equipment, producing the art and
science of electrolysis, thermolysis and blend methods
Nail technicians clean, shape and apply lacquer to fingernails and toenails and
provide related treatments.

TRAINING PROVIDER STANDARDS FOR INSTRUCTORS
Instructor qualifications
Instructors must possess the following qualifications

Level 2 Certificate of Qualification or equivalent
A minimum of 3 years industry experience
A minimum of 1 year of formal teaching experience or teaching credentials
appropriate to the level of the program

Or a combination of formal education qualifications and industry experience that
equals the minimum requirements.
Institutions hiring instructors must require their instructors to possess both formal industry
and teaching credentials and experience.
Continuing studies
Instructors must complete a total of 16 hours of professional development in teaching and
esthetics each year: 8 hours of professional development related to teaching and
education and 8 hours of professional development in esthetics.
