Who were the Puritans? Why did they come to the New World?
Puritans were 17th century English people who did not agree with the practices in the
Church of England. They wanted to purify the church. They fled England to start a new life
in Massachusetts Bay.
Were the Puritans tolerant of other religions? Why is this ironic?
They believed theirs was the only true religion, and they were not tolerant of other
beliefs. They banished those who did not follow Puritan beliefs. Even though they were
treated with religious intolerance, they treated others with the same intolerance
What is the difference between Pilgrims and Puritans? Can a Pilgrim be a Puritan?
A Pilgrim makes a journey for religious purposes.
A Puritan wants to purify the English church.
A Pilgrim can be a Puritan – the Puritans who went to Massachusetts Bay were Pilgrims
because they were on a religious journey.

Who was Roger Williams?
Roger Williams was a Quaker who held different beliefs than the Puritans.
 Allowed Catholics, Jews, Quakers, and Atheists to join him in Rhode Island
 Did not believe the church should make the laws or separation of church and state
Give three reasons Roger Williams was unpopular with the other Puritans.
 Believed the Native Americans had rights and should be treated with respect
 Tolerated all religions and their beliefs
 Established the separation of church and state, which is a founding principal of US
government today.
What does freedom of conscience mean?
Freedom of conscience is the freedom to believe what you want and practice your own
ideas/religion.
Who was Anne Hutchinson, and why were the Puritan leaders threatened by her popularity?
Anne Hutchinson was an outspoken woman who believed people didn’t have to go to
church to practice her beliefs or talk to God. She shared her beliefs with others in her
home, and this threatened the leaders of the Puritan church because these people agreed
with her and she became popular. Her beliefs threaten the power of the Puritan Church
leaders.
What happened to Mary Dyer?
Mary Dyer was banished twice from Massachusetts for her beliefs and when she returned
a third time, she was hung for refusing to follow the Puritan rules. She was a Quaker who
were also known as Society of Friends.

Who was Margaret Brent and why is she important?
Margaret Brent was the first woman in the New World to establish a successful
plantation. She and her sister set the standard for female business ownership.
What was the name of the first college established in North America?
Harvard College
Rhode Island was the first colony to establish the separation of church and state. Separation of
church and state means that Churches can’t make laws or tell the state what to do and how to
govern the people.

Who was John Smith’s “target audience” to come to New England? Name three specific groups.
Why would these groups make good members of the new colony?
1) Young married couples
2) Orphans
3) Master craftsmen
Young married- people would work, and they would encourage population growth.
Orphans-could be trained by master craftsmen to learn a trade and would build the
economy. Since these orphans they had no families, they had no ties to England and could
easily leave for the New World.
Master craftsmen- would train their apprentices (orphans) and help build the towns. They
also helped build the economy by selling their items.
What is a master? What is an apprentice? How are they connected to one another?
Masters were well trained and new their craft. They specialized in a trade such as
blacksmith, silversmith, cobbler, builder of houses, etc.
The apprentice was a young man who worked for the master in exchange for room and
board.
They are connected because the apprentice learns the trade in order to take over or start
his own trade as an adult.
Why would John Smith’s plan for Colonization benefit the King of England, the masters, and also
their servants? Or why would the idea of colonization benefit a country?
People would get wealthy from learning a trade and selling their wares. The economy
would build in the new world. Items would be sent back to England to be sold. The new
land gained would be in the name of England.
Land + Wealth = Power!
What was the purpose of the Mayflower Compact (license)?
The Mayflower Compact was a written document signed by the people on the Mayflower
that stated the set of laws they would follow in order to live and work together peaceably
in the New World. This agreement was given to the people on the Mayflower and the
terms were decided on by the King of England.
