The Assignment and Presentation Format
Theories “X”, “Y”, & “Z” are concerned with 3 basic styles of management. Attached is a comparison of those three styles.
As a future manager, either in your own business, or working as a manager for an organization, you will ultimately develop a
management style/technique unique to your own beliefs and your own personality. In addition to the actual
Essay/Document, you must give an Oral Presentation summarizing your philosophy. Your grade will be enhanced more
favorably with the use of many resources and references, rather than with less. A minimum of five to six resources must be
used.
In a typewritten or word processed document of no less than 5 pages (APA), you are to develop your own Personal
Management Philosophy which outlines how you would like to manage people, organizations, and materials through the
five primary functions of management. This document should address the topics covered in class discussions and case
exercises, but you should not limit your resources strictly to the textbook. A minimum of 5 to 6 resources are necessary.
1
The topics to be included in your paper should include, but are not limited to: Managerial Functions; Decision
Making; Open Systems; Human Resources; Global Economy; Leadership; Employee Motivation; Service and/or Product
Quality; MBO; Managing Conflict; Communications; Personal and Professional Ethics; Organizational Culture; Planning;
Authority and Power; Social Responsibility; Organizational Structure; Delegating versus doing it yourself; Managing
Information; Teamwork; Performance; Diversity; Managing Your Own Time; Self & Employee Development.
YOU NEED TO CHOOSE A MINIMUM OF FOUR TOPICS IN ADDITION TO THE MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF MANAGERS
TO DISCUSS.
Internet and Other Resources
You may use any resources you would like to use. Certainly your textbook will be a useful resource. Other resources might
include textbooks from other courses you have taken, management books, magazines or periodicals found in the library,
discussion with other instructors or with managers already in the workplace either where you already work or elsewhere,
and the Internet. It is suggested you look at the following web sites for ideas:

a section for each topic you can do that as well. Make sure as much detail as possible is included in your paper to
adequately address the topics.
Presentation: (35 points)
You must spend a minimum of TEN minutes presenting your research to the class. The goal of the research presentation
component is to have you defend your findings in order to convince the audience that your theory is the best. PowerPoint
must be used as a visual aid, and you must summarize all important aspects of your findings. You can also incorporate
other visuals including pictures, video, or graphics as you find appropriate. Furthermore, you should dress appropriately in
either business casual or professional attire.
Each student in the class will be designated to ask ONE question for TWO presentations. The question can be anything
related to the presentation, paper, and/or course. The presenter must answer each question with a professional and
appropriate response. Your individual presentations scores will include the questions that you are assigned to ask.
The audience will rank each presentation and the most convincing presentation will receive an additional 10 points added to
their grade. The runner up will receive an additional 5 points added to their grade.
