1 Workshop One BIBLICAL WISDOM Nehemiah 8:2–3, 12 (NIV) So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. . . . Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them. Special men were appointed to help the people understand God’s Word because if they did not understand it, it would do little good. With help from some good communicators, the people understood the words that were declared to them. They went away praising God, because understanding God’s Word brings such a sweet sense of joy. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” MGT 205/WS1 3 Questions to Consider: 1. In your organization, what would it mean for you to be salt and light? 2. Would implementing this passage into your work life make you an incurably religious person, or a more effective communicator? 3. Would you have to change the way you communicate to fulfill the spirit of this passage?
