Lesson 2: The Tough Conversations There are a select few topics that are difficult to discuss between members of a family business such as a sorority. How do you handle situations where a sister is acting out of line with your entity’s code of conduct? How to start the conversion with a sister who can’t pay their dues or will be put on academic probation? This Lesson is dedicated to answering those questions and more. This lesson will challenge your entity to review their judicial procedures and work toward finding common ground in touchy situations within your sisterhood. True / False Amethyst: Lesson 2 – The Tough Conversations Page | 2 Sisterhood Enhancement Committee Manual/ Mock Sessions Please review the Sisterhood Enhanacement Committee Manual on the Online Community Resoure Center and answer the following questions with the assistance of a member of your entity advisory committee: 1. What areas of the sisterhood does the SEC Maintain? 2. What are the 3 Cs? 3. The SEC should meet a minimum of __________ per month. 4. What are the responsibilities of the SEC? After you have answered these questions, throroughly review the section on Standards and Mediations and have your SEC, including a member of your entity advisory committee, host a mock mediation session. Your advisroy committee member is responsible for being the mediator during this mock session. After your mock mediation session, please have your SEC members reflect on the following areas of their expreience and share their answers with the group: What went well? What was challenging? How can we improve this experience in the future? Have your SEC review the following scenario and host a mock Standards hearing with one member portraying the sister in this scenario: There is a sister in your entity who has constantly been absent for business meetings over the past semester and hasn’t been showing up for events or Ritual practices. This sister has been making it very difficult to get in contact with her, but you can see that the entity is getting more frustrated with this sister. You have heard that this sister is having some family issues, but she hasn’t discussed these issues with anyone. Follow the procedures outlined in the Standards Hearing section of the SEC Manual to address and resolve this issue as efficiently as possible. Have the member portraying this sister decide what is going on, how she will react to being called to SEC, and how much information she will share duing the hearing. After your mock SEC hearing, please have your SEC members reflect on the following areas of their expreience and share their answers with the group: What went well? What was challenging? How can we improve this experience in the future?
