SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE MINUTES
April 18, 2014 10AM
Meeting Location: AHS-218
Members Present: Andy Ray, Allen Bottorff, Clarence Canada, Jerry Reed, Patricia Smith, Sylvan
Vester, Larry Rosen, Josh Rittenberry, Earl Spatcher, John Letterman, Javier Garcies and Patti Riva
Old Business:
Minutes approved.
New Business:
1) Call the meeting to order at 10:02 am.
2) Introductions
3) Arbor Day: A suggestion was made to focus next year’s event a bit more and including
more service learning.
4) Discussion of Water refilling stations: Maybe distribution of water refilling station flyers at
orientation. Perhaps attempt to do that digitally rather than paper? Could we possibly use the
ATLAS website for sustainability “Do you knows”?
5) Bat Box, Osprey Nest, and Benches at Lake Pamela: We are currently moving forward with
the bat box, we need a 5-FT X 5-FT vinyl chain-link fence. We are having “issues” with campus
administration vision of the benches. Is there an opportunity to bring the library into the
outdoor Lake Pamela improvements? Should we create a graphic of all the good works
(endowed chair, improvements, etc..) for use in showing off what has been done and the
importance of the link to academics, students, and Lake Pamela.
6)
2014 Earth Day recap: East Campus is April 3 - Event was well attended and successful
Skillshops are going well and engage students (Monthly). It ties the students with behind
the scenes and services that support the sustainability mission
7)
Summer Activities: Traditionally no activities scheduled in summer due to low
enrollment.
8) Recycling: Do we actually dispose of recycling as a separate or single stream?
9) 2014 SACUBO Finalist and winner of Recyclemania: Finalist and winner of Recyclemania
for third (3) year in a row.
10) Healthy Vending: The financials show that the sales are supporting the deployment.
11) Presentation on outdoor areas of Valencia College West Campus: Is this open to cart traffic
for a reason? Plant Operations is going to replace the wood board fence to cut off “Roadways”.
Do we have plans for control burns? Let’s sign the lake buffer area to explain the areas that do
not get mowed; maybe some wood board fencing to sporadically delineate the area. The
committee members will discuss what might replace the desert sunflower that was removed
from behind building 8.
12) Next meeting – May 16, 2014.
13) Adjourn at 10:59 a.m.
