Bilinski Fellowships in Second Language Studies Guidelines for Students The Department of Second Language Studies has received grants from the Bilinski Educational Foundation to assist high achieving PhD students who demonstrate financial need and meet residency requirements. The Bilinski fellowship program consists of three fellowships, each of which targets a different period in the PhD program. 1. Bilinski Dissertation Fellowship This fellowship supports PhD students who have recently advanced to candidacy, or are about to advance to candidacy. The funds are to be used for the payment of educational expenses and necessary living expenses. Fellows are expected to work full time on their dissertation for the duration of the fellowship period (i.e., no outside employment), and are expected to defend their dissertation and complete the degree before the end of the fellowship period. Amount of award: Duration of award: Application due date: $12,500 per semester Up to three (3) semesters, with the possibility of a fourth semester for substantial fieldwork. February 29, 2016 2. Bilinski Pre- Dissertation Fellowship This fellowship supports students in the semester immediately preceding their anticipated advancement to candidacy. The purpose of this fellowship is to free students from their teaching duties so that degree requirements may be completed in a timely fashion. It is therefore not permitted to concurrently hold this fellowship and a departmental GAship, or to hold outside employment for the duration of the fellowship (one semester).The funds are to be used for the payment of educational expenses and for necessary living expenses. Bilinski Pre-Dissertation Research Award This award aims to support students in collecting data to develop the research design for their dissertation in preparation of the dissertation proposal or prospectus. Eligible expenses include ground/air travel, meals and accommodation, equipment, software, participant payments, etc. A one-page report on the outcomes of the project is required upon completion of the award period. Be a full-time PhD student in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. 2. Maintain good academic standing at all times. 3. Have demonstrated exceptional ability and potential in their field of study. 4. Have demonstrated financial need. 5. Be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident. Bilinski Dissertation Fellowship 1. At initial selection, be a student who advances to candidacy in the upcoming academic year. 2. In the event a fourth semester of Fellowship Fund support is requested, the dissertation committee chair has to confirm that unusual circumstances warrant the extension. 3. Fellowship Funds are not to be awarded if the dissertation has already been substantially completed. 4. A semesterly agreement form must be signed by the fellow and the dissertation committee chair and submitted, documenting (i) continued financial need and (ii) progress in dissertation writing. Bilinski Pre- Dissertation Fellowship 1. This fellowship supports students in the semester immediately preceding their anticipated advancement to candidacy (typically the seventh semester in the Ph.D. program). 2. Must demonstrate high likelihood of advancing to candidacy. Bilinski Pre-Dissertation Research Award 1. This research award supports students collecting data that will be used to support a dissertation proposal/prospectus. 2. Must demonstrate high quality of research. Notes: 1. Those who receive the Research Award are eligible to (subsequently or concurrently) apply for the Pre-Dissertation Fellowship. 2. Those who receive either the Research Award or the Pre-Dissertation Fellowship are eligible to (subsequently) apply for the Dissertation Fellowship. 3. Research Award amount is up to $5,000. The Selection Committee reserves the right to reduce proposed budgets, and to award amounts below that requested in the application.
